POLICEMANS CLUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 503,977, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed January 19 1893. $erial No. 458,907. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABIEL W. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Policemens Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention isdesigned to reduce liability of inflicting permanent injury on the criminal, without necessarily lessening the effectiveness of the weapon for its intended use; and the saidinvention consists in a club composed of a central core piece enveloped and wholly inclosed with an integral piece of india-rubber, or other material of similar quality, leaving no part of said core exposed, presenting upon the exterior a suitable and convenient form of club adapted to be grasped by the hand.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, represents an external perspective view of the club; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation, and Fig. 3, a cross section at 0c:z:, Fig. 2.
The external covering A, is preferably composed of india-rubber, adapted to be molded in an integral piece of the form illustrated, closed at both ends when the article is complete, as shown in Fig. 2. The core B, is composed of any suitable stiff material, such as iron or wood and the envelope A, is provided at one end with a perforation C, which, owing to the elasticity of the rubber, may be expanded for the insertion of the core B, and will, after such insertion, contract over the core completely iuclosing it, as shown. The perforation C, is provided with beveled margins, as shown in Fig. 2, for convenience in inserting the core B, but said beveled margins of the perforation C, serve also to prevent the core B, being extracted, or partly extracted, so as to expose the rigid part. The envelope A, may be molded around the core B, if desired; omitting the perforation C, in the manufacture of the article.
I am aware that heretofore batons have been constructed of an internal core and an external covering of layers of leather structurally united together, and I am also aware that batons have been partially covered with an india-rubber cylinder extending a part of its length, but, however, exposing both ends of the rigid interior part, and I do not, therefore, claim the mere application of cushioning material upon a club, but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A policem'ans club, composed of a central core piece, and an elastic envelope, constructed in an integral piece, and wholly inclosing said core, substantially as described.
ABIEL W. NELSON.
