Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
A. H. COLE, OF SYLVANIA, OHIO.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,337. dated October 10, 1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, A. H. COLE, of Sylvania, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part vof this specitication.
The present invention relates more particularl y to buckles used for the tugs or trace-straps to the llames of harnesses for horses; and it consists in a novel construction of the same, whereby the tugs can be buckled and unbuckled with great readiness and with no trouble, and, besides, it is not'necessary to bend the straps in order to pass them through the buckles, the disadvantages ot which have been long apparent.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved buckle is illustrated, Figure l being a side view of the same, showing it applied to a strap; Fig. 2, a central section taken in the direction of its length.
a c in the drawings represent the frame ot' the buckle, made of any suitable metal and hung at one end, b, to and in the strap c, fastened to the haine-collar of the harness, as with ordinary buckles. Through this frame a, and in the direction of its length, under the crossbars d andf of the same-one at the outer end and the other between it and the end hung in the hame-strap, as described-the tug or tracestrap g is passed, and secured at any desired position by interlocking the prong h of the wedge-shape piece Z, with the proper aperture m thereof. This wedge l is placed under the middle or intermediate cross bar, f, of the buckle, and is tightly wedged therein by pulling the trace with sufcient force in the direction represented by red arrows in Fig. 2, as is obvious without further explanation, thus secu rely holding the tug or trace, to release which it is only necessary to give it a sudden and quick pull in the opposite direction, when the tongue or prong h is thrown outor disengaged from the strap, as shown in red lines in Fig. 2.
From the above description it `is evident that by my construction of the buckle the greater the horse pulls or strains the tugs the tighter the wedge is made to hold them; and that, furthermore, it is not necessary to bend the strap in passing it through it. The inconvenience and disadvantage, as well as destruct tive effects upon the leather, have been long known, as before remarked, and desired to be obviated. I
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe combination, with the buckle-frame a, of the wed ge-shaped piece or tongue l, arranged together and operating substantially in the manner described.
The above speciication of my invention signed by me this 13th day of July, 1865.
A. H. COLE. Witnesses:
ALBERT W. BROWN, M. M. LIVINGSTON.
