SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,077, dated August 8, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM FoRsYTH, of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists of abox made preferably of paper, or card board, or other suitable sheet material, constructed and arranged all substantially as hereinafter fully described and shown, reference being had to the accompanying sheetsY of drawings in which is illustrated a box constructed in accordance with this invention. i

Figure l, represents ablank from which the box is made. Fig. l, represents the blank from which the cover-is made. Fig. 2 represents in perspective the box as closed, one end being in cross section. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 but with the box opened out or use. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4-4 In the drawings A represents a box and B its cover'made preferably of paper or card board, the box being constructed and the cover made and secured thereto as will be described.

A sheet of paper or card board is first cut into the shape and form or blank shown at O, Fig. l, in which D is for the bottom, E and F the two sides, G and H the two ends, J, K, L, and M the corner pieces, being extensions of the ends, and which are slightly tapering, and N, P, the two flaps, one to'each end, the dotted lines in the figure representing the division between the several parts and the lines of folds of the sheet, the sheet on such lines being scored or indented or cut on one side partially through the thickness, by which the sheet can be easily folded on such lines without breaking or injuring the material.

In making the box, the two sides E, F are folded upward on the lines a, h, the corner pieces J, K, L, and M, are bent upward on their folding lines d, e, f and g, the ends folded up on their lines h, m, their respective corner pieces being placed inside the folded sides, and each corner piece secured by paste or other suitable adhesive material to the inner side next thereto, as shown in cross section in Fig. 4, and when so folded and all corners pasted the end iiaps N, P, are then folded on their respective lines o, w, over the top edges of the box as shown in Fig. 3 for one end of the box.

' With the box folded and the corners secured as described,stiffeningorstrengtheningpieces Q Q2, of a little less than thelength and Width of the sides, and ends, are then secured by paste or other suit-able adhesive material to the inner side E, F of each side and end respectively as shown, the side strengthening f pieces being also secured to and over the corner pieces of their respective ends and thus securely fastening the corner pieces between the sides and their respective strengthening pieces, the ends Gr also having a similar strengthening piece but not shown in the drawings.

R Fig. 1a shows the form or blank for the cover B of the box, and it is of a length to extend the length of the box and is divided by scoring lines n, r, into three parts S, T, U; S and U each being of the width of a side of the box and T of the width of the box. A strip V of cloth or other iiexible sheet material is secured by paste or other suitable adhesive material, along one edge t, of one flap U of the cover, and along the under side of the box at one edge as at u, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. The cover after being secured to lthe box, is folded over and closed upon the box, its' free side piece, extending down over the side F, of the box opposite to the hinge side as shown in Fig. 2, where it can be secured by a cord or string or in any suitable manner. The lines of folds of the cover sheet are arranged for each part to fit its respective portion of the box to which it applies.

In opening the box to display whatever goods there may be in the box the cover B is folded back on its hinge piece V and placed under the box, as shown in perspective and cross section in Fig. 3, so that it is practically out of the way and not taking up room.

In transporting a large number of the boxes it is preferable to do so when in the sheet form shown in Figs. 1, and 1a `the party to Whom they are sent folding and securing them together as described. l

The stiffening pieces Q can be secured to the sides and end portions before the box is folded such pieces being sufiiciently short and narrow to allow of the folding of the sheet at its proper places. It secured before the box is folded they must be left free at cach end a short distance, on the side pieces, to allow for the corner pieces to be inserted between them and the sides of the box, to be secured therein.

The corner pieces can be a part of the sides in lieu ot the ends although it is preferable to have them as described, and the folding and shaping the box from the sheets can be proceeded with in any desired manner than as herein particularly described.

Although this box is preferably to be made of paper or card board, it can be made of any suitable sheet material.

Having the cover secured by a cloth strip or other flexible sheet material enables the cover to be folded back and under the box as shown, being then substantially out of the Way although the cover can be secured in any suitable manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A box made of any suitable sheet material, consisting of a bottom, sides and ends, corner pieces, one to each side or end and each secured to the end, or side next thereto,

`.a cover having two iiaps, one at each side adapted to fold over and iit the sides and top of the box and secured at and along the edge of one Hap to the lower edge of one side of the box.

2. A box made of any suitable sheet material, consisting of a bottom, sides, and ends, corner pieces, one to each side or end, and cach secured to the end or side next thereto, a ilap on each end to fold over on the top of the box, a cover having two flaps adapted to fold over and t the sides and top of the box, one at each side, and secured at and along the edge of one iiap to the lower edge of one side of the box.

3. A box made of any suitable sheet matetrial consisting of a bottom, sides and ends, corner pieces, one to each side or end, and cach secured to the end or side next thereto,

a cover having two flaps, one at each side adapted to fold over and fit the sides and top of the box, and a strip of fiexible sheet material secured to and along the edge of one flap and to and along the lower edge oi' one side of the box.

4. A box made ot any suitable sheetmaterial, consisting of a bottom, sides, and ends, corner pieces to each side or end and each sccured to the end or side next thereto, a flap on each end to fold over on the top of the box, a cover having two fiaps, one at each side, adapted to fold over and iit the sides and top of the box, and a strip of flexible sheet material secured to and along the edge of one flap, and to and along the lower edge ot' one side of the box.

5. A box made of any suitable sheet material, consisting of a bottom, sides, and ends, a flap of each end to fold over on the top of the box, strengthening or stiftening pieces Secured to each side and end, corner pieces to each end secured to and between their respective side and strengthening pieces, a cover having two flaps one at each side, adapted to fold over and Iit the sides, and top oi" the box, and a strip of iiexible sheet material secured along the edge of one tiap, and along the lower edge of one side of the box, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

6. A blank for a box, having a central portion D for the bottom, side portions E, F, end portions G, I-I, strengthening pieces to the sides and ends, corner pieces, J, K, L, M, to the end pieces to be secured to their respective sides, tia ps N, P, to each end piece respectively, and scoring or indenting lines between the several parts on which they are folded.
