PEN OR PENCIL HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,011, dated August 8, 1893.

Application filed March 23, 18931 To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAAC H. STATHEM, a citizen of the United'States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen or Pencil Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in pen or pencil holders, and it consists in certain improvements on the patents to Galland, No. 147,930, granted February 24, 1874:, and to Peiter, No. 343,391, granted June 8, 1886.

The object of this invention is to enable persons working out of doors in winter, such as railway clerks, check clerks, &c., to wear a comfortable glove when at work and at the same time be able to use efficiently a pen or pencil.

The invention consists of two resilient and adjustable rings pivotally secured together, the one being adapted to hold a pencil or pen, and the other being adapted to slip over the finger, and being adjustable so that it may be placed readily on the finger and fit snugly there whether a glove be worn or not. Moreover, this adjustable ring enables the device to be readily adapted to fingers of various sizes.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the pencil holder in use for writing. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the pencil holder fitted on the hand, and illustrates the method of turning the same to use the rubber end. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the pencil holdershowing the rubber end of the pencil in use. Fig. 4; represents a perspective view of the pencil holder detached from the hand, and Fig. 5 represents a central transverse section through the pencil holder.

B represents a spring clip provided with resilient hooked arms b. This spring clip is revolubly attached to the adjustable ring A by means of the rivet b. The pen or pencil O is slipped into the spring clamp B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The pen or pencil is then steadied between the thumb and forefinger as shown in Fig. 1, and one can readily write with cold and numbed fingers, or with gloved hands. Should a pencil with an erasive tip be used, the pencil may be readily reversed, and the erasive tip 0 be brought into action, instead of the point 0, by a simple motion of the thumb, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. Again, should it be desired to throw the pencil entirely out of use, it may be either slipped out of the spring clamp, or the said clamp may be turned up on the back of the finger, when the pencil will be out of the way of the palm of the hand; or it may be carried in the palm of the hand when desired. It will thus be seen that a simple, adjustable, and reversible pen or pencil holder is provided.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A pen and pencil holder comprising an adjustable finger ring and a spring clamp adapted to hold a pencil and revolubly attached to said adjustable finger ring, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. Apen and pencil holder comprising an adj ustable ring A made of resilient material having ends a, and a and keepers A and A attached to said ends respectively, and the spring clamp B revolubly connected to said ringA and provided with spring holding arms I), substantially as and for the purposes described.
