SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,606, dated July 18, 1893.

Application filed April 15, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LAWBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Founders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to an improvement in clothes pounders, and it has for its object to provide at a minimum expense, a device which will be eflfective for the purposes designed, and will require but little exertion to operate it.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective View of my improved pounder washing machine with the handle partly broken away. Fig. 2, is a ver tical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3, is a cross sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the dotted line tax, on Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, is a perspective View of one end of the handle. 7

In carrying out my invention, I .take a block of wood, or other suitable material A, and shape it with flat sides a, and well rounded corners b, the size of the block depending upon the capacity of work to be performed. This block is provided on its upper side with a central circular aperture 0, to receive the handle, and leading from the base of this aperture, is a vertical, aperture 01, of a less diameter, and this latter aperture connects at its lower end with an enlarged central hole or aperture e. The block is also provided in its four sides and exterior to the central hole or aperture e, with vertical longitudinal apertures f; there being eight of these shown in the present illustration. These apertures f, are preferably circular in cross section and extend a sufficient length of the block adjacent to the margin, within the body. 1 These longitudinal apertures are respectively connected at their upper ends with the aperture Serial No. 470,449. 0, by oblique channels g, as better shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings. It will thus be seen that the hole or aperture e, and also the respective holes or apertures f, are all connected with each other, and also with the hole or aperture in which the handle is inserted.

The under side or lower end of the block is provided with beveled or V-shaped grooves h, formed one between each of the holes or apertures f, and all of these grooves or recesses lead into the central hole or aperture 6.

The handle B, is not designed to fit down in the base wall of the hole or aperture 0, but is designed to leave a space 11, beneath its lower end when in position. This handle has its lower end provided with grooves 70, which intersect, as shown, and will materially aid in forming channels or passages for the air and water so as to offer no obstruction to the free circulation of the air during operation.

With a device of this construction, the cleansing of clothes is very much facilitated. It is very effective in operation and requires but little exertion in its use.

While I have described very specifically, the device of the exact construction shown and described, yet I do not wish to confine myself to such precise construction shown, but

reserve the right to make such modifications and changes as may fairly fall within the scope of my invention. 7 7

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a clothes pounder, comprising a head formed from a block of wood, and having the central, vertical aperture 6, in its under side, a simi lar aperture 0, in its upper side, the narrow aperture d, connecting the upper and lower apertures, theseries of vertical, longitudinal apertures f, exterior to the central aperture, the oblique channels'g, connecting the exterior aperture, with the upper, central aperture, and the face of the block having the grooves '71, and the lower ends of the apertured parts f, projecting as shown, and a suitable'handle placed in the upper, central aperture, subed corners and also having the central Vertical hole or aperture e, the Vertical aperture 0, and the intermediate aperture d, connecting the upper and lower center apertures, the longitndinal vertical series of holes or apertures f, the oblique channels g, connecting these latter apertures or holes with the handle hole, in combination with the handle having its under side grooved and placed in the aperture 0, so as to form a chamberor space i, substan- 1o t-ially as specified.
