Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,5;76, dated April 14, 1874; application filed November 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMEs B. CLEVELAND and WM. H. CLEVELAND, both of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in 'Washing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specifica' tion.
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts which will be more fully described hereafter. v
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan'view of the machine. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken on the line .fr m, Fig. 3.
a represents the box or frame of the machine, which is supported upon the legs b, and which is provided with a metal bottom, c. J ournaled in this box is the rotary washer or cage d, which consists of a number of slats secured to the circular end pieces e. Each one of these slats is placed upon a small inclined plane, formed in the edges o f the end pieces, and each one has a groove, .2, formed in one or both of its edges, which serve as buckets to carry up the water a certain distance, and then discharge it down upon the clothes, as the Washer is being revolved around by means of the gear-wheel g and pinion c' attached to the handle Z. To the under side of the box is attached the furnace m for heating the Water in which the clothes are being washed, and which consists of a metal box, open at the top, having the re-box n. extending its full length through the center, and a 'chamber or reservoir, o, on each side of it.
By constructing the furnace in this manner, a greatly-increased heating-surface is obtained whereby the cost of fuel is greatly reduced, and the water much more quickly heated.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- A washin g-machine consisting of the frame a, rotary washer d, having the grooves 2 in its slats, the gears g i, and furnace m., having the water-spaces o on each side of the lire-place, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 23d day of October, 1873.
JAMES B. CLEVELAND. WILLIAM H. CLEVELAND.
