IZVESSES UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. MCKELVEY, OF LAWRENCEVILL, GEORGIA.
FUMIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,528, dated July 18, 1893.
Application tiled April 4, 1893. Serial No. 469,054. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it Aknown that I, JAMES R.l\/ICKELVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceville, in the county of Gwinnett and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fumigators; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fumigators and more particularly to that class in which vapors or gases are generated by the application of heat to the usual destructive agents for the vaporiza'- tion of the same.
Itconsists of the several details of construction enumerated below and which will be summed up in the claim following.
The figure represents a vertical sectional view of my device.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this case-A represents the base or furnace portion of my improved fumigator, having the usual legs a, and furnace door b.' Vithin the base is located the tire box B, which in this instance I have represented as a perforated disk supported on legs to lift it away from the bottom of the base portion and thereby secure ample draft to the fire boX and perfect combustion of the fuel. The upper edge of the'base is provided with an inwardly projecting ange C, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
D, represents the receptacle for containing the insecticide. This is shown as being cylindrical in form and it is adapted to be telescoped within the upper part of theb'ase. At the sides of this receptacle are placed three lugs or projections o, which are to engage the flange C, and prevent the receptacle passing more than a certain distance within the base. The lugs may be made adjustable, if desired or they may be substituted by a flange extending around the entire diameter of thereceptacle D.
The top is provided with cover or screw cap and to this is affixed atube E, containing the valve mechanism which is of the usual that it retains all the fumes Within the chamber until the requisite pressure is obtained whereby the said fumes may be forced into holes, bu rrows, or crevices by their own expansiveness. Anozzle e, projects from the tube E, and from thisa flexible tube or hose is coupled which tube or hose serves to convey the fumes to any desired point. The' free end of the hose is provided with another nozzle and also with a suitable non-conducting hand grasp. This hand grasp is removable from the hose but has the end which engages the nozzle smaller than the other parts of its bore in order that it may take hold of the nozzle by frictional contact and hold it firmly while in use.
The operation of the device is obvious from the foregoing as it is only necessary to charge the receptacle with the desired insecticide and apply heat through the [ire box and the product thereof will be speedily available. Bails are provided for the furnace and receptacle for the manipulation of each.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fumigator comprising a base or furnace portion having a fire box therein an insectieide receptacle telescoping in said base portion an inturned flange on the said furnace portion, lugs on the receptacle for engaging said flange, valve mechanism on said receptacle, a nozzle leading therefrom, flexible tubing coupled with said nozzle, and an auxiliary nozzle for projecting the fumes from the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. MCKELV-EY.
