FUMIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,867, dated March 2, 1897. i
Application filed May 22, 1896. Serial No. 592,671. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARL F. LAUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fumigators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fumigators, and has for its object to provide a device of this description which Will be simple in construction and cheap of manufacture and by means of which insect life may be exterminated from plants.
W'ith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand howto make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, lin which- Figure l is a side View of my improved fumigator; Fig. 2, a central section thereof, and Fig. 3 a section at the line :c @c of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I provide a cylindrical receptacle A of sufficient size to hold the desired quantity of tobacco or other fumigating material, and the open end of this cylinder is closed by a cap B, having a number of perforations C formed therein to permit the indrawing of the air and the expelling of the smoke, as hereinafter set forth. The opposite end of the cylinder is permanently closed by a circular plug D, having a Harige E of a size adapted to lit within said cylinder, and upon this annular flange rests the screen F, which latter is preferably of wiregauze or made of any suitable material. By this arrangement when tobacco is placed in the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2, it rests upon the screen, thus leaving a space G unoccupied. Upon the lower end of the plug is formed a nipple II, by means of which the rubber bulb I is attached to said-plug, the bead .I serving to prevent the accidental withdrawal of said bulb, as will be readily understood.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: rlobacco is placed within the receptacle, and after being lighted the receptacle is closed by the cover B and the air in the bulb expelled through the receptacle by the pressure of the hand and a fresh quantity of air drawn through said receptacle in the-opposite direction by the releasing of the bulb, 4which will assume its normal shape by the elasticity of the material of which it is composed. This indrawing of the air will supply the necessary oxygen to the burning tobacco to continue the smoldering combustion after the manner of pipe-smoking, and when the air is again excluded from the bulb the smoke which has been drawn into said bulb will be forced through the perforations and driven to a dbnsiderable distance, and when directed toward the plants to be fumigated will completely envelop said plants, permeating every part thereof and, as is well known, exterminating the insect life Whichmay exist thereon. The upper surface of the cover B is somewhat convexed, the object of which is to cause the smoke issuing from the perforations to diverge in either passage from the apparatus, thus causing attenuation of said smoke and permitting it to envelop a larger number of plants.
One of the principal advantages of my improvement is that the device may be held in the hand and manipulated with little or no effort on the part of the operator, the screen F serving to prevent the clogging of the passage K by nicotine or the doWnfalling of the tobacco, and the shape of the plug D preventing a sufficient amount of heat from reaching the bulb to affect the same.
When it is necessary to clean the apparatus, it is easily accomplished by removing the cover B, which gives access to the cylinder, and also the bulb I, which gives access to the opening K, itbeing understood that the screen F is also removable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character described a cylinder, a cover on one end, said cover having a convex surface with perforations therethrough, a bead formed on said cylinder to limit the position of the cover, a plug secured in the other end by a flange, a wire-gauze rest- IOO ing ou said flange leaving an air-space be- Xed my signature in the presence of two subtWeen the gauze and the plu g, a'nipple formed scribing with esses. with said plug ending in a head, said plug w having a passage therethrough and au elastic CARL I4' LAUBER' 5 bulb attached to the nipple as and for the Vitnesses:
purpose described. S. S. WILLIAMSON, In testimony whereof I have hereunto af- MARK BUFORD.
