SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,675, dated December 22, 1896.

To CLZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM MYRLIN LU- THER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Protecting Plants from Insects, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to means for protecting plants from insects; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device for smoking the plants.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a longitudinal central section of my improved plant-smoker.

In the practice of my invention I provide a stem 5, which consists, preferably, of a metal tube and which is provided at one end with a cylindrical head or bowl 6, with which it communicates, and the outer end of which is open, as shown at 7, and I also provide a thimble 8, which is adapted to be inserted into said bowl or head, as clearly shown, and the outer end of which is preferably semispherical in form, as shown at 9, and perforated, as shown at 10, and they inner end thereof is open. I also provide a hollow elastic ball 11, composed of rubber or similar material and such as is usually employed in atomizers and similar devices, and said ball is connected with the end of the stem 5, opposite the bowl or head 6, in any desired manner.

In practice the thimble 8 is filled with tobacco or other suitable material, as shown at 12, which is ignited at the open end of said thimble, and said thimble is then inserted into the head or bowl 6, and by manipulating the ball 11 in the usual manner the smoke will be projected through the perforation or perforations 10 at the outer end of the thimble.

I usually put a hood of paper over the plant to be smoked, which extends nearly to the ground, and the thimble 8 or the outer end thereof is inserted beneath said hood and the ball 11 manipulated until the said hood is filled with the smoke.

This device is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the use of tobacco for the purpose herein specified and any suitable material may be employed.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture a device for smoking plants consisting of a stem or a metal tube, a cylindrical head or bowl at one end thereof, and in communication therewith, said tube having an open outer end a thimble adapted to be inserted into said bowl or head'having an outer end of asemispherical form, a hollow elastic ball secured to said stem opposite to said head in any desired manner, said thimble being adapted to receive tobacco or other material, all of the said parts being combined substantially as and for the purposes described.
