Specification of Letters Patent. y Patented NGV. 3G, 1915.
Application filed September 28, 1914. Serial No. 863,930.
T0 all whom it may concern: c
Be it known thatl, INsHRisri Asi-reim, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Ulm, in the county ofr Austin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vventilating-cowls for use on buildings and the like, and its Objectis to produce aventilator that will help to create a draft through the tubular stem, and that at the same time will serve as a spark arrester.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement ofparts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illus-v trated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and yin which- Figure 1` is a side elevation of a ventilating cowl constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan. Fig. 4 is a vertical section. Fig. V5 is a cross section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral l designates the tubular stem of I ny improved Ventilating cowl and 2 is a cap arranged to overhangr theV upper end of said stem to which it is secured by angular braces 3. About the upper portion of the tubular stem and cap 2 I provide a cylindrical shell 4, open at the top, formed with a plurality of apertures or perforations 5 and provided with an integral perforated base 6, open in the center to admit the tubular stem to which said base is secured in any suitable manner. Adja-l cent the upper or openend of the cylindrical shell I provide a ring 7 formed with in!A tegral feet 8 by which it is secured to the inner wall of said shell bolts 9, the inner lower edge of the cap 2.
'The smoke', Yair and sparks passing up through the tubular stem will strike the cap 2, the smoke and airbeing deflected thereby and caused to pass out under the lower edge out between the cap and the ring 7 vinto the atmosphere. 'Some Vof the sparks will fall back into the tubular stem, some may pass out beneath the cap 2 and fall upon'tlie bot'- tom 6 direct, or strike the ring 7 and then fall upon said bottoni, the possibility of any sparksy escaping frointhe device and causingv destructive fires is practically m'Z. Y
v What is claimed is A device ofthe type described, including a tubular stem or member. aconical cap having an internal deiecting surface, with its baseoifset from, and positioned somewhat above the upper end of said stem, angular bracket-like connections between said `cap and stein, and Va cylinder provided with numerous draftgenerating` passages therethrough the lower end of which cylinder is provided with a base also having numerous air passages and fixed to said cylinder, the upper end of said cylinder opening upwardly and slightly above said cap of said stem, said cylinder having attached to its inner side an annular deiiector, said deflector having its inner edge slightly spaced from, and somewhat above the base-edge of said conical cap. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownl have hereto affixed my signature in the. presence of two subscribing wit- IIGSSGS.
