SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,369, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed November 15, 1892. Serial No. 452,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SANFORD SEYMOUR, of Lake Geneva, in the county of WValworth and State of Wisconsin,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and it has for its object to construct a wrench in a simple, durable and economic manner, and to render it capable of convenient and expeditious application to a nut of any size.
The invention consists in the. novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l isa perspective view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one member of the body of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the second body member, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the member shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of the wrench; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken through the modification.
The body A of the wrench comprises essentially two sections 10 and 11, adapted to act in the capacity of jaws. Each jaw is practically L-shaped in general contour and what may be termed the back membera of the section 10 is longer than the like member a. of the section or jaw 11. The two sections or jaws have a hinged connection which is effected in the following manner. Two sockets 13 and 14, are formed upon the outer extremity 0f the member a of the body section 10, the sockets being located one above the other, respectively at top and bottom of that member. At the junction of the two members of the sections or jaw 11, two recesses 15 and 16 are produced, one in the top and the other in the bottom, said recesses being adapted to receive the sockets 13 and 14, and between the two recesses along socket 17 is located, adapted to enter the space between the short sockets 13 and 14 and register therewith, in order that a pin may be passed through one of the sockets to complete the hinging of the jaws, as shown in Fig.1. By the method of hinging the jaws the back member a of the jaws 11 overlaps the outer face of the corresponding member a of the jaw 10, and the body of the Wrench is g ven an approximately rectangular shape and 1s open at one end for the reception of a nut. The free end of the short section member a 1s rounded off or rendered cylindrical, as shown at 18 in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, and said edge may be slightly beveled inwardly if found desirable. The jaw 11, is the movable one, and it 1s operated by a cam 19 pivoted upon the back member of the jaw 10, the cam constitutlng the head or upper end of a handle 20 of any desired length, and where the handle connects with the head a rectangular enlargement 21 is formed. The edge of the cam is beveled, as shown at 22, in order that it may pass beneath and impinge upon the cylindrical end of the movable jaw. The side membenof the movable jaw is preferably provided w th an inner facing or pad 23, of leather or llke material, to prevent a nut slipping when between the jaws.
In operation, after the jaws 10 and 11, have received a nut, the handle is moved in a direction to force the cam against the cylindrical end of the movable jaw, thereby carrying that jaw to a clamping engagement with the nut. When such an engagement is established the cam locks the jaw and the nut may be unscrewed, removed and laid aside, remaining during that time between the jaws of the wrench. When the nut is to be replaced, the handleis carried in an opposite direction to that taken in unscrewing, and when the nut soengages with its bolt as to carry the cam out of locking contact with the movable jaw, the projection on the handle will strike said jaw and hold it on the nut until the latter is tightly screwedto place. The position of the handle may be reversed when required, and as shown in Fig. 6, the handle may be provided with a bent section 2 1 near its upper end, and the jaws at the junction of their members may be bowed, as shown at 25 in Fig. 5, this form of wrench being particularly adapted for use'as a buggy wrench.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a wrench,the combination of two approximately L-shaped pivoted jaws, one jaw being pivoted at the junction of its members to the rear member of the other jaw, with its rear memberoverlapping the same,and means adapted to be passed between the said rear members to force the jaws toward each other, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench the combination of two approximately L-shaped pivoted jaws, the rear member of one jaw being pivoted to the other jaw at the junction of its members, and a cam pivoted on the rear member of the stationary jaw and engaging the rear member of the movable jaw to swing it on its pivot, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, the combination with two approximately L-shaped pivoted jaws, the
rear member of one jaw being pivoted to the other jaw at the juncture of its members, of a cam pivoted to the rear member of the stationary jaw and provided on its face with an enlargement, substantially as described.
4. In a wrench, the combination with a body comprising two jaws having a hinged connection, one jaw overlapping the other and one overlapping end having acyclin- (lrical surface, of a cam pivoted upon one jaw and engaging with the overlapping cylind rical surface of the other jaw, a projection formed upon one face of the cam, and a handle connected with the cam, substantially as described.
