TYPE HOLDER. No. 501,358. Patented July 11,1893.
k? g a 6 f a 6L5 (SQ/71w 166 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL I-I. NESBIT, OF ANTHONY, KANSAS.
TYPE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,358, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed March 9, 1893- Serial No. 465,327. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. NESBlT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anthony, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders; and I do doclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to a new and novel device for holding insertible type to be used in connection With postmarking and stamp-canceling machines, and has for its object a portable holder easily manipulated, which will enable an operator to make quickly and correctly the necessary changes in the dates, and serve as a convenient receptacle for the type, and facilitate the cleaning thereof after use.
My invention consists essentially in a casingfor containing the type the'front of the casing being open or partially open to permit an inspection of the contents; in a spring-actuated follower normally operating by pressure on the column of type to prevent the accidental displacement thereof; and in certain details of construction whereby a type can be readily removed and returned to its proper position with relation to the other type, all of which I will now fully and clearly describe and ascertain, and reference is to be had in v connection with such description to the acing is rectangular in cross section to conform to the shape of the type, and is sufficient in length to accommodate in itslower portion a, thirty-one or more type 19, corresponding to the days of a month, which are arranged in a column numerically. The lower portion a. of the casing is partially cut away to form an elongated slot 0 to expose the type and permit a ready inspection thereof, or as shown in Fig. 3, the whole of the front of this portion a may be removed. But I prefer to employ the construction shown in Figsl and 2 as in this case the liability of the accidental removal of the type is obviated. At the upper end of the slot 0 is another slot (1 arranged at right angles to the length of the casing and extending entirely across the front thereof; and through which slot 01 the type are inserted and fall in place. In Fig. 3, the front of the casing being entirely removed from the lower portion, this slot is dispensed with, and the type are insertible at any position along the length of said portion. The lower portion of the front of the casing is cut away as are also the sides, for a short distance to form an opening 6 whereby a portion of the lowermost type is exposed sufficiently to enable the operator to seize and remove the same.
In the upper portion a of the casing is a follower f which abuts against the uppermost type and is held in contact therewith by a coil spring g which is interposed between the said follower and the top of the casing as shown. This follower has a pin 7?. extending outward therefrom which works in a slot 41in the portion a and arranged on said pin is a knob j by which said follower is moved by hand against the action of the spring.
In operation, the follower is moved by hand past the slot at and the type are inserted by said slot, in numerical order beginning with 1, and ending with 31, or untilthe column is complete, and the knob beingreleased, the follower actuated by the spring returns to its normal position, and by pressure on the column prevents the displacement of the lower type. When a type is required for use the knob is moved back and the pressure being relieved on the column the lower type is withdrawn by hand, and the follower moves the column a distance equal to the space caused by the removal of said type, and the lowermost type is then 2. When a change of type is required, the used type is inserted by the slot at, the follower being first raised, and
the lower type 2 is withdrawn, and 3 presented at the lower opening, and so on. Thus the necessary changes in the type may be changed without delay, and without mistake, inasmuch as the required type is the only one that can be withdrawn.
Any desired type may be employed, as for instance that representing the days of the month, the hours, the months, and year, or in some instances the alphabet.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device for holding type comprising a casing for holding the type in a column, a follower, a spring for moving said follower, and openings in the casing for the insertion and removal of the type.
2. A device for holding type comprising a casing having an opening in its lower portion for holding a column of type, a slot at the top of said opening for the insertion of said type, a slot at the bottom of the casing for the removal thereof, and a spring-actuated follower in the upper portion of the casing operating With the column in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
