Be it known that I, CLAnENoE A. BisHor, a citizen vof the United States, residing in the city of New .Yor-k, borough of Brook- 'ly1 i, county of Kings, and. State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Calculating Ap aratus, of which the following is a speciy catOli.
This invention is an apparatus for effectingcalculations, the same being intended, more particularly, for use in connection with insertible time cards for determining elapsed time and ,with insertible time and Wage cards -for calculating automatically the value of- Workmens Wages for variable periods at iiXed rates per hour.
An apparatus embodying the invention is intended .to receive the time card if elapsed time only .is to be calculated, or the Wage and time card if the time and Wage value are to be calculated, such card or cards being provided With an appropriate scale or scales, and said caidfor` cards being in-` sertible into the machine at certain periods or intervals of time, as for example when the Workman begins noi-k and completes Work on a particular job assigned to him. The machine is ot such construction that the workman cannot interfere with its operation, such as by insertinga too-l or Wire into it, Without ruiming the risk of detection, for the reason thatthe moving parts are i11- cased or housed to preclude access thereto; but to prevent movement of a time-driven member-by manipulation of the card to be operated upon, means are provided for lock- .iiig such time-driven member, such locking means being independent of the time-operated mechanism and being brought into action solely by manual manipulation of the card. e
A machine embodying the invention employs, among' other things, a card marking member and a card positioning member, one being movable relative to the other'by the time-operated mechanism. It is preferred to use. a punching or recessing device as the card marking member, said card punching o-r recessing device being positioned for manual operation at any 'time by the Workman. t
-The machine of this application is intended, more'particularly, orfcarrying out .the method disclosed in my copending application tiled June 9, 1910, Serial No.v 565,959,.,which eventuated in .Patent No larly asto that feature thereof which embodies the recessing device adapted to punch 1n a card a 'recess .of alpa'rticular form or shape, a time train, a movable guide operated or advanced by the time train and having the same foi-m in horizontal cross section as the recess punched in the card by the recessing de.- vice but in reverse thereto so that when the card is punched at the endof a given time and reversed; the said' guide will lill the recess.
According to one part 'of this invention, the card is inserted twice into the machine, and is punched or recessed a like number of times, one of such recesses or punches being produced in the card at the time the Workman starts Work on the assigned `iob, and the other at the time of completing work on the job. To indicate on the card the time of starting the Work and the elapsed time, and to insure that the card shall at the second punching operation be inserted into a beveled exposed card enoaging portion reversely positioned to the beveled operating punch of said punch mechanism, Whereby after the card is first punched to produce the beveled recess at the beginning ot the work, said card must be reversed prior to the second punching operation to indicate the completion ot the Work, which reversal of thecard enables it to be positioned at the secondpunching operation for the beveled. edged recess irst punched therein to registerand Contact properly with the beveled card-engaging portion of the card-retaining member.
In the apparatus to be hereinafter described as a preferred embodiment of the invention, the card punching member is normally stationary, Whereas the card positioning member ismovable, by clock mechanism of one form or another. The card retaining illeinber ,embodies a moving part and a plurality ci card-engaging elements movable with said moving part, said card engaging elements being positioned so that' operated mechanism for locking the card retaining member, said locking means being operable by manipulation of the card subsequent to its insertion. ln a preferred form of said locking means, the card engaging elements of the card positioning member are pivoted to the moving part and they are provided with means for frictionally clutching them to the guideway for said moving part. llhus, upon the inser tion of the card in a proper manner, for the purpose of punching it, the card engaging elements are ree from clutching ,engage ment with the guideway, but should the workman manipulate the card in any way so as to shift the normally inaccessible card positioning member Jfor giving an unaccrued increase in wages, then the displacement of the card, to even a slight degree, so acts on one or the other of the card engaging elements as to lock the card positioning member from movement, thus effectively and automatically frustrating the workmans surreptitious effort to secure an increased wage accounting.
The time-operated card engaging member is movable relative 'to the punching device at`predeterinined intervals and Jfor a predetermined distance, such. distances corresponding to the divisions of the inserted card, so that the recesses will be produced in a proper manner in the card. rlVhe total distance traveled by the card positioning niember is equal to the lengtho the scale on the card, so as to represent ordinarily the working hours of a day.
In a preferred form, the invention cmbodies means 'for automatically releasing the card positioning member from the time train the completion of the hours necessary to cover a working day, and for returning said card positioning member a starting position, but when it is desired to use the machine 'for calculating over-time, means are provided whereby the same mechanism may be used to produce recesses in a card for denoting overtime.
The means :tor returning the card posi-A tioning member to a starting position is a' drum actuated by a spring, the latter being placed under tension by the operation of the time train main spring, said drum being held fast to one of the timer train arbors by a notched wheel engaged by a pawl, but when fthe-pawl and wheel have turned a predef' Aconsists of means independentot the time termined distance, then the pawl is disengaged from the notched wheel and the spring drum becomes effective in automatically returning the card positioning member to the starting position. To adapt the mechanism for denoting over-time work on cards, z'. e. for the hours which elapse between the endingof the working day and the beginning of the next, a simple mechanism is employed in connection with said spring drum, notched wheel and pawl. Said mechanism is embodied in a second pawl and a second wheel, said 'second pawl being actuated by the second wheel so as to malte the drum fast with the arbor of the time train, whereby the second pawl'is effective in imparting the mo tion' of the time train to the card retaining member for operating` the latter in the intervalvdenoting over-time and before the next regular day begins, then the second pawl is automatically thrown out of operative position and the first named pawl is at the proper interval engaged with the notched wheel to place the machine in readiness for use during the regular working hours.

The base or casing A is provided with a .chamber a within which is contained certain so as to provide an opening b through which a marginal portion of a card is adapted to be inserted. The rear portion of the cover plate is intended Ato contact with the top so as to form an abutment for engagement by the edge of the card when the lat-ter is inserted below the cover plate and across the slot b in the casing, and this cover `plate precludes directI access to the card retaining member or to the mechanism contained within chamber' o of the base.
In. the machine shown, the punching mechanism is normally station-ary with respect to the base upon which said punching mechanism is mounted, whereby the punching mechanism -is exposed for convenient operation by hand.' Any suitable form of punch mechanism may be employed, but, as shown more 'particularly in Fig. 4t, the punch mechanism embodies a post o, a plunger .0 and' a spring c2. The post c is fixed in any suitable way to the top of the base. said post being constructed and positioned to overhang the cover plate B, and within this post is provided a vertical passage 03,'
within which operates plunge-r c. The plunger is shown as having a suit-able exposed operating` head c, and around said plunger is positioned the coiled spring c2. The lower part of the spring rests upon a shoulder provided in 'vertical passage c2 ot the post, whereas the upperpart ot the spring acts against a shoulder provided below the operating head 0*, said spring acting, mainly, to support the plunger in av raised position. rlhe plunger is. prevented from turning within the post by a stop pin c5, the latter serving, also, a means tor arresting the upward movement of the plunger under the impulse of spring c2. The plunger operates in an aperture provided in. the cover plate (as shown in Fig. e.) ,A and the lower part of this plunger is a punch or die C, shown more particularly in Fig. G. The punch ordie is in alinement vertically with a female die D, shown in Fig, fl as being countersunk in the top of the base so that the card may slip over said female die, the `.latter being, at one side of 4a, vertical slot o, and in register with said female die D is a discharge tube d leading into or through the base, for the purpose of discharging the cuttings which are produced by the operation of punch or die C upon the cards inserted into the machine.

Mounted loosely on the lower part of one arbor, such as L, of the time train is a spool J adapted to turn independently of the arbor. Said spool is'provided at one end with a gear pinion j, and at its other end with a dislrj, the latter being provided with a notch or tooth jg. The gear j of the spool is in mesh directly with teeth j of a rack bar J', the latter being xedly secured to the end portion c2 of the carriage bar. The carrying arm K is secured rigidly to the lower extremity of arbor 7if by a screw 7c so that. the arm K will rotate with the post, and kon this arm K is mounted a feedpawl K by a pin 7a2. This pawl is pressed by a spring 7e3 into the notch jg of wheel y, and the pawl thus operates to make the wheel fast with the arbor, whereby the motion of the time train transmitted through `arbor 7i is communicated by the pawl and the notched disk to the gear y' for the purpose of moving rack J and the carriage, so as to impel-the card engaging elements E E .for apredetermined distance and at predetermined intervals sof time. When the disk and the pawl make one complete revolution, the heelZ of said pawl engages with a fixed post l, thereby disengaging the nose of the pawl from the notch in the wheel At this time the power of a return spring L becomes effective in turning spool J, the notched disk y" and gear y' in a/ backward direction for the purpose of moving the carriage and the card engaging elements back' to a starting position. The spring L is coiled around the spool, one end of the spring is attached to said spool and the other end of the lspring is anchored on the iixed pin Z; lVhen the carriage is in an operative position and is movable under the action of the time train controlled by the escapement so as to travel in the direction of the arrow of Fig. l, the power of the main spring Gr impels the time train and the carriage, and it is available, also, in placing the spring L under ,tensiong but upon the disengagement of pawl K from the notch i2 of wheel j, then the recoil of spring L acting upon the spool .l turns the spool, disk j', and gear y' in a reverse direction, for the purpose of returning the carriage and elements E E to starting position. lVhen the paWl is disengaged from the notch in the Wheel, the nose of said pawl is pressed by the spring into contact with the peripheral edge of said wheel. and thus the pawl is retained in position to enter the notch in the wheel at the proper-time.

This means for detecting an unwarranted attempt on the part of the workman will be referred to as a detector device, and in a preferred form it is operated by the punch carrying plungervso as to produce perforations in a certain part of the card. The detector element is embodied in a vieldable barL M housed or contained within a. recessed is provided with depending pins or studs m arranged to enter apertures n provided in the top of the casing. The detector bar is adapted to be depressed when the plunger is operated to punch or recess the card by a stem N, the latter being shown in Figs, 3 and l as attached to the plunger head et, and the lower end of said plunger stem being adapted to pass through an opening 'n' provided in cover plate B at a point directly above thedetector bar M. The detector bar is composed, preferably, of spring steel so that it-will raise or lift. itself above lthe path of the card when the latter is inserted below the cover and across slot b. New, when the, punch" plunger is forcibly depressed, steniN will move downwardly and act upon the detector bar so as to force the latter toward the card, whereby pins m will perforate the card along a certain line provided on said card, the material cut out of the card passing through the openings n into chamber a of the base. TWhen the card is properly inserted two or more pins m will punch perforations in the card .along a certain predetermined line, but. should the card be turned at an angle or improperly positioned and the punch mechanism operated, then the pins m of the detector bar N will punch holes in the card not along the cation that the Workman4 has attempted to secure nnearned time or wage value by m properly positioning the card in the machine. y v
The card shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is one of several kinds which may be used, said card haring suitable spaces for the receptionof data pertaining to the date, the job number, the workmans name and nnmber, the operation to be performed, and various other printed matter. In addition to the notch a2 and the spaces m for receiving the desired data, the card is provided with a scale ,z denoting elapsed time. said scale being divided into hours and fractions thereof corresponding to the working hours of the day, and said scale reading progressively from the notched corner :c substan-` tially to the opposite end of the card In art m of cover B. In addition to the fore- 'going'scale or scales, the card is provided with an indicating line e2 along which the card may be punched by the operation ot 'the pins m of detectorl bar M, two of said 'jpunch marks being indicated by the reien ence character z3. f
The o eration of theinvention as thus far described is as foilows: The main spring G is wound so as to place it under tension, and assuming that the carriage is at. the starting position for the card receiving elements to occupy the relation to the punching mechanism illustrated in full and dotted lines in Figs. l and B, the pawl K is pressed by the spring for the nose 'of said pawl to enter the notch 7'2 of wheel j', whereby the time train acts through the arbr h and arm K to impart movementto the pawl and the notched wheel for t-he4 purpose of turning the gear y', and thereby imparting movement to the carriage and the card retaining elements thereon. With the parts in the starting position at the beginnin of a working day say at 7 a. m., the wor an inserts a card into the machine in the following manner: The card is turned face down to start, or in the position shown in Fig. 7, the notched corner of the card engaging with the iinger f of element E, whereas the. opposite edge of the card is in contact with the upstanding end of element E', whereby the card is positioned for its respect-ive edges to engage with the respective members E E. TheV card is inserted below the cover plate, over slot b and below the plunger and the detector bar, after which plunger head c4 is struck a forcible blow, it being assumed that the card is properlypositioned in the machine. The downward movement of the plunger forces the die or punch C through an edge portionof the card and opposite to the time at which the card was inserted and, simultaneously with this downward movement of the plunger, stem N acts upon the detector bar M so as to produce perforations .2,3 in the card along the index line .e2 thereon. iVith the card inserted'face downward in the starting position, the punch or die C producesf'a recess w in the marginal portion of the card` and the card having been properly punched the workman re moves it from 'the machine and carries it away with him. it wiil he understood that the worlnnan is assigned, a piece oi work at the beginning of the day and is given one of the record cards, on which. the date job number, and other data-'should be written. Having punched the card in thefmanner and Jfor the purposes described the workman carries it with him and proceeds to work on the assigned joh. The card positioning member having been advanced by the time train durin',5 the time intervening the rst and secon insertions of the card, it follows that the card when inserted thesecond time into the machine will occupy a diiierent position to the punch mechanism from that which it occupied during the first punching operation. New when the punch is operated to produce the second recess w in the card, said second recess w occupies a reverse posit-ion to the rst recess w, and the amount of elapsed time will be indicated between -the end of the card and the second recess io punched in the marginal portion of said card. The card having been punched for the second time, it is removed 'from the niachine and it serves as the basis for the accounting of the value of the 'workmans wages.
if desired tlie workman may be supplie-d with `a card for eachjoh of work, and when the particular job is completed by that particular workman said card is turned into the auditing department for the purpose of keeping a record of the cost oi' the work and the time devoted by the workman thereto. in this connection attention is called to the fact that by providing the card with a wage scale, the value of the time on cach job will be computed. automatically by the punching or recessing operations, ior thc reason that the wage value will be indicated in the scale at the same time that the scalo .e indicates the elapsed time. But as the worlnnen are paid at different rates per hour, and as it may not he desirable or other workmen to iio comme '7 learn the Wages paid to a particular ivo-rl;- man, the cards may not be provided vwith wage scales, in which event one standard card ivith the elapsed time scale will he used, and these standard cards will he supplied to all worlnnen. The card provided With the elapsed time scale and to be punched by the operation ofthe machine will attord the basis for the calculation ot' the value of the work or the u'orlnnans wages, for the reason that the cards when punched and delivered to the audit-ing' department can be placed in such relation to the scales on certain charts as to rapidly7 and accuratelv7 calculate the wage value tor the particular time devoted to the job.
Again, provision maybe made on the cardv for indicating thereon the ditlerent jobs oi Work which are assigned to each worlnnan for a full. days time. This requires the Workman to denote the numbers ot the different jobs and the character of the operations performed thereon, but the card should be punched onli7 at the beginning ci the day and one or more times according,- as the .vorlr on the lich is completed and the work on another job is commenced.
As hereinbefore indicated the ca rriage with the elements E E is impelled bv the time traintor a predetermined distance and at predetermined intervals controllable by the escapex'nent mechanism, which in turn is under the control of the master clock' when a series of recorders are employed on the same circuit, but the total distance traveled by the carriage and the elements E E thereon is equal substantially to the length' ot' the card to be inserted in the machine. The mechanism for this purpose operates in conjunction with the time train, the. carriage, the releasing' device, and the resetting device hereinbet'ore described. In Aaddition 'to the mechanisms and devices described, the machine is equipped With the parts illustrated in 9, 10 and l1 ot the drawings. in which figures K designates the arm with the pawl KQ J is the spool provided 1with the notched Wheel j and the rear L the spring attached to the spool and anchored at one end on the fixed post Z, and il is the rack on the carriage which is equipped with the card positioning members E E, all as hereinbctore described* O designates a second arm positioned next to arm K, said arm O being at an angle to arm l, and being fixed by the screw 7u to the lower part of arbor fi, whereby the arm G is adapted to operate in conjunction with arm hf. On the arm O is carried a secondpaivl l? pivoted intermediate its ends by a pin p to the arm. The nose of the paul is provided with a stud p which is arranged to contact with the peripheral edge or' the notched Wheel j and at certain times to enter into the notch 7'2 therein7 for the prupose ot making the arm O and pawl P act as a second means for connecting' and disconnecting the time train with the spool Cl. Said second pavvl P is under the controll of a spring` p2 which acts' to retain the studn in contact with the notched Wheel j or the notch jg therein, and the heel of this second paivl is adapted for engagement with `one or the other of a 'group of notches or teeth provided in an 'escape wheel Q., the
latter beingl carried on an arbor g mounted in the traine F. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking member, of a guideway, a part ymovable thereon, a plurality of card engaging members carried by said movable part and spaced relative to each other for'the introduction of a card between them, and means operable by the displacement of one of said card 4engaging members from a normal position -for restraining said movable part and either' of the card engaging members from movement relative to the card marking device.

In a recording ap ara-tus, the combination With.a card marking member, of a carriage, a plurality of card engaging membersmovable with said carriage, said card engaging members being spaced for the in-v` sert-ion of a cardinto contact therewith, and means operated by the shifting of one card engaging member from a normal position for restraining said carriage from movement.
11. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking member and a card engaging member, ,of detector means positioned in operative relation to the card engaging member for indlcating on a card the improperinsertion thereof with respect to said card engaging member.
12. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking device and a` card engaging member, of detector means operable by the card marking member tor .indicating ona card the improper insert-ion thereof relative to said card marking member.
13. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a cardmarking device, and a card engaging member, of a detector device operable by said card marking device for punching'a card to indicate the proper or improper insertion of saidl card relative to the card engaging member.

In a calculating apparatus, the combinatio-n of an insertible card, a reccssing device, a time tra-in, a movable guide operated by said time train to advance said guide in the direction of the recessing device, and a second movable guide operated by the saine time train and located at a distance from the first uide substantially equal to the length of said card, the recessing device and the first mentioned guide having the same form in cross sect-ion, but one being the reverse ct the otherso that the said guide cannot properly enter the'recess made b v the recessing device unless said card is reversed.
20. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a cardmarking device, of a card positioning member, a carriage therefor, a timetrain for imparting movementto said carriage, and means for automatically returning the carriage to a starting position.
21. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking device, ot' a carriage, a card positioning member thereon, a time train for .imparting movement to said carriage, means for connecting and disconnecting the ti'met-rain with said carriage, and tension means for returning said carriage to a starting position, said returning means being placed under tension by the o-peration of the time train.
22. In a recording apparatus carriage, a card positioning member thereon, a time train for imparting movement. to said carriage, means for connecting and disconnecting the time train with said carriage, means for tripping said connecting and disconnecting means to release the carriage from the time train, and means for returning the carriage to a starting position.
23. In a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking device, of a clock operated member, and means for automatically re-setting said member and for operating the same to adapt the recorder for use during overtime working-hours as well as for use during regular working hours.

InV a recording apparatus, the combination 'with a card marking device, and a clock operated card positioning member, of means for automaticallyv resetting said card positioning member to a .starting position, means whereby said card positioning member is operated for indicating on` a card the the combi! nation with a card marking device, of a periods of overtime work, and vtripping means for rendering inactive the overtime means.

In' a recording apparatus, the combination with a card marking device, and a card positioning member, of a time train, a feed pawl and disk for connecting the time train with said card positioning member, means for releasing the feed pawl, means for resetting the card positioning member to starting position, and a second feed pawl for engagement with. said disk and-for connecting the time train with the card positioning member so that the lattermay be used for indicating overtime work on inserted cards, 26.
