Description

I {No MOGQLL G. H. CARI-301V.
SPLINT LAUNDRY BASKET.
Patente dJuly 4, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE H. OARLSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SPL'INT LAUNDRY-BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,991, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed October 10.1892. Serial No. (Ndmfldflld To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE l-I. OAELsoN, a subject of theKing of Sweden and Norway, residing in San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splint Laundry-Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in splint laundry baskets by first interlacing or interweaving the splints together in two parts or sections, so as to form a diamond shaped figure of them, the two sections being brought together so as to form the sides of the basket. The ends being made to overlap each other for several inches, are bound firmly upon the splint work inside and outside by means of upright pieces fastened down over their overlapping edges, and having the upper and lower edges bound together by outside and inside strips of wood or other material, said body part having a bottom of splint work interwoven as the sides with the edges bound together inside and outside by frame pieces of Wood firmly fastened thereon, and provided with handles of wood or other material fastened upon and to the outside and inside upright pieces, as seen in the drawings.
The objects of my improvements are to provide a laundry basket made of splints, first interwoven or interlaced together in two parts, or sections, the ends of which are brought together overlapping each other, the one over and upon the other, said ends of splint work being supported and held in place by upright pieces of wood or other material, covering the overlapping place where the ends terminate, said body part being provided with a splint bottom with the splints interwoven like the body part and having the inner and outer edges of the same bound with wood frame pieces or strips fitted tightly under the ends of the inside upright pieces that bind the ends of the overlapping splint work, forming the body part of the basket, having also two long strips of wood running from each corner diagonally across on the outside of the said bottom from one corner of the same to the opposite corner, crossing each other at the center, for the purpose of supporting and giving firmness to the splint work. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the following drawings:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the basket; Fig. 2, the outside bottom part. Fig. 3, shows lapping of the ends of the splint sections forming the body part of the basket.
A. represents the basket; B. bottom; a. splints; b. the upright pieces binding the overlapping ends of splint sections forming the sides or body part of basket; 0. strips binding the edges of splints at the top and bottom; 01. handles; e. frame pieces binding edges of splint bottom; f. cross pieces under the bottom.
The basket may be made in different sizes so as tonest one withinthe other. The splints interlacing each other diagonally, and the ends of the sections overlapping each other at the ends so as to form two thicknesses, and braced by the upright inside and outside supports, and having the edges of the splints bound on both sides by strips or frame pieces of wood 0. 0. make the sides of the basket strong and durable. The bottom resting upon the inside strip that binds the edges of the splints that form the sides of the basket, is thereby raised on the inside the width of said frame strip and is thus protected from wear.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A laundry basket made of splints, having the sides interwoven in two parts and united to form the sides or body part of the same by bringing the parts together and overlapping their ends; the splints so interlacing each other as to form a diamond shaped figure, the overlapping ends being secured by upright pieces on the inside and outside of the overlapping places, fastened to each other over the splints and acting as supports to the body splint work, and having a framed splint bottom firmly fastened down upon the inside strip, that binds the edges of the bodysplint work, and furnished with handles at the top, substantially as herein described and set forth.
2. In a laundry basket made of splints, the
combination of the two interwoven splint the body splint work, and havinghandles d. parts forming the body parts with the inside attached at the top of the outer ends, suband outside upright pieces supporting the stantially as herein described and set forth.
