' Be it known that I, ADANIEL R. ENRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful IImprovements in Printers Galleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a light, strong and inexpensive galley which shall combine the lightness and general desirability of a galley made of Wood with the strength and durability of a galley made entirely of metal.

My invention consists furthermore in the special construction of parts which I will now describe referring by numbers to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in Which- Figure l is a plan view of my novel galley; Fig. 2 a section on the line fr: in Fig. l; Fig. 3 a view of the partial metallic casing of one of the side pieces, and Fig. 4 a view of the partial metallic case for the end piece.

l denotes the bottom which is a plate of sheet metal sufficiently heavy to give the necessary strength and rigidity in use. The side pieces consist of bars 2 of Wood, all the portions of said bars however that are exposed to Wear in use being covered by metal as clearly shown in Figs. 2 a'nd 3. The partial casing of each side piece consists of an inner plate 3, a bottom plate 4, a metallic strap 5 which in connection With'the inner plate and the bottom plate incloses the inner end of the side piece, and a pocket 6 which fully incloses the sides and outer ends of the side pieces. It will be seen in Fig. 2 that the outer ends of the Wooden portions of the' side .pieces are cut awayon their under sides, and that the pockets are correspondingly shaped so as to just fit the ends of the bars closely, leaving olf-sets 7 on the under sides of the outer ends of the side bars. These off-sets are for the purpose of engaging the edge of a table, the top of the off-set resting upon the top of the table and the end of the off-set resting against the edge of the table thereby supporting one end of the galley and permitting the user to crowd it forward so that he can hold it easily and comfortably with one hand and Without danger of its slipping off f rom the table and While the galley is thus supported b y the offset against the edge of the table the work man may transfer the type from the galley to the Atable or the reverse, Without danger of the inner edge of the galley falling or becoming displaced.

g From Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the metallic pockets 6 at the oset portion 7 present metallic Wearing surfaces or plates l0, 11 which receive the end thrust of the galley and the down thrust due to the Weight. The form of the pocket with these wearing plates is such that the offset end of the Wooden strip is entirely inclosed and protected. The strap 5 ata/the opposite end is left open and the Wooden strip may be inserted through it When placing the parts together.

The end piece consists of a bar of wood, and an inner and bottom plate the same as the side piece. Both ends of the end piece however are made like the inner ends of the side pieces, that is with a strap 5, which in connection with the inner and bottom plates completely incloses the bar of Wood as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 in connection with Fig. l. In assembling, the bottom is secured tothe side and end pieces by means of screws plates.

Having thus described my invention, I claim# l. In a galley the combination of a base plate, the Wooden side and end strips, and the metallic lining for said Wooden strips comprising the bottom plates 4, the inner plates 8 connected therewith and the straps 5, at the ends of the plates inclosing the ends of the insertion of the Wooden strips, substantially as described.
