UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST SMELLIEJOF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FOWNES BROTHERS & 00., OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,601, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed February 1, 1893. Serial No. 460,556. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST SMELLIE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No. 526 Broadway, New York, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
According to my present invention, I provide a glove in which the palm and front of the fingers are composed of a porous or semiporous material, while the back is composed of leather or similar non-porous material. I carry the material forming the back around the two outside fingers, so that when the glove is being worn, unless the palm is turned up-' ward, which is unusual, it looks as if the Whole were made of the material forming the back.
Figure 1 shows the piece forming the back. Fig. 2 is a view showing the piece forming the palm, and Fig. 3, the thumb piece. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the front of a glove embodying my improvements, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the back of such a glove.
The thumb and the forgets, or pieces between the fingers are made of the same material, as the back. As shown in the drawings, about three-fourths of the little finger, and forefinger, are formed from the same material as the back, while only about one-fourth is formed of the same material as the front.
The cut of the thumb forms no part of this invention, and may be varied at pleasure.
A glove made in accordance with my invention is especially adapted for warm climates, and for evening wear. I preferably make the palm of Milanese silk, or other similar traverse warp fabric, or other porous or semi-porous material, and the back I preferably make of leather, such as kid. A glove 40 thus constructed has the appearance of the conventional kid glove, but the front portion being made of porous material, means for ventilation is afforded, evaporation is permitted,-and the hand may be rapidly cooled 5 by simply passing it back and forth through the air.
The porous material preferably employed is not only porous, but is thin, and therefore, cooler, as it more readilypermits evaporation 5c and ventilation. By the special cut of the blanks which I employ, the porous material is not ordinarily visible. The kid not only covers the back of the hand and fingers which are most generally exposed to view, but also the sides of the fingers.
I claim as my invention 1. A glove in which the back, the thumb, the pieces between the fingers and the sides of the little finger and fore finger are made of non-porous material, such as kid, While the palm and the fronts of the fingers are made from a thin porous material.
2. A glove in which the palm is made of thin, porous material, and the back is made 6 of kid, which also extends around the outer sides of the little finger and the fore-finger and around the side of the palm to meet the thin porous material, for the purpose specified.
ERNEST SMELLIE.
