NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST NOVVOTNY AND MATI-IIAS VLASAK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,568, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed February 25, 1893. Serial No. 463,711- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, AUGUST N OWOTNY and MATHIAS VLAsAK, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders for Christmas- Trees; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to candle holders especially designed for Christmas tree decorations.
The object of the invention is to provide a candle holder for supporting a series of lights and which can be readily attached to the trunk of the tree thereby relieving the branches and preventing them from being over burdened.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of a holder which will admit of the lights being readily adjusted laterally and to and from the trunk of the tree to the required position.
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a candle holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the clip. Fig. 3 is a view of the clip taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of clip showing spring lips punched therefrom to bear upon the rods forming the holder to obtain sufficient friction to hold the said rods in the required position. Fig. 5 is a further modification showing the clip formed from spring sheet metal and deflected from a normal position so as to create a tension on the bars provided with the candle holders.
The candle holder is composed of two rods A and B which are arranged to cross one another, the rod B having candle holders 1) b at its ends, and the rod A having a candle holder at at its outer end and a gimlet point at its inner end by means of which the device is readily attached to the tree or other support. A clip D is provided to connect the rods A and B together at their point of crossing and comprises a pair of upwardly extending wings d d which are apertured to receive the rod B, and with a pair of downwardly extending wings d which are apertured to receive the rods A. The wings d are located in a plane at right angles to the plane of the wings 01', thereby admitting of the rods crossing at right angles. Obviously, the wings d and 01' may be relatively disposed so that the rods A and B may cross at any required angle. The rods and the openings in the wings will be so constructed that the said rods will be prevented from turning in the saidopenings and yet be free to have a relative longitudinal movement through the said wings to admit of the lights being carried by the rod B being adjusted to and from the trunk of the tree and laterally as required. In the present instance the rods are square in cross section and the opening in the wings are of a corresponding shape. The said rods may have any form in cross'section and the openings in the wings may be of a corresponding shape which will admit of the rod B moving relative to the rod A but prevents any turning of the said rod in the clip.
The candle holders 6 and a may be of any approved form of construction and will be provided with'drip cups to prevent the spilling of grease upon the tree or floor.
In order to secure the rods in the located position it has been found advantageous to provide the clip with spring tongues e which are adapted to press laterally on the rods and create sufficient tension to prevent the accidental slipping of the rods. These spring tongues e are punched from the body of the clip, one being deflected upward to press against the rod B and the other downward to bear on the rod A.
Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the apertured wings are deflected from a normal position to receive the rods and which have a tendency to regain the normal position and produce a friction on the rods sufficient to hold them in the located position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A candle holder composed of two rodsA and B which are arranged to cross one another, the rod B having candle holders b b at its ends, and the rod A having agimlet point at one end and a candle holder at the other end, and a clip to secure the rods together at the point of crossing and admitting of the rod B having a longitudinal movement and a movement on the rod A, substantially as set forth.
2. A candle holder composed of two rods A and B provided with candle holders and a clip having pairs of wings extending in opposite directions and apertured to receive the said rods A and B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a candle holder comprising rods A and B which are adapted to cross and move relatively toeach other the combination of a clip
