Description

(No Model.)
A. A. PAGE; LOGK AND LATCH COMBINED.
No. 499,469. Patented June 13, 1893.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. PAGE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SARGENT & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCK AND LATCH COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,469, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed November 21, 1892. Serial No. 452,695. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. PAGE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in a Combined Lock and Latch; and I do hereby declarethe following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view of a combined lock and latch constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a view thereof in inside elevation. Fig. 3, is an inside view of the device, the case being removed; Fig. 4., a view of the device in horizontal section on the line mx of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a broken view of the device in horizontal section, showing the key-mechanism with the key in place. Fig. 6, is a broken view in elevation showing the hub of the key-mechanism, and (by broken lines) its wire ward.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined lock and latch, particularly designed for screen, or other light doors, the object being to provide for such uses, a simple,
compact, convenient and inexpensive device H composed of few parts, which are constructed and arranged not only to permit the latchbolt to be pushed back into its retired positionwhen it engages with the strike on the door-jamb, without jarring or straining the door, but also to secure practically the same range of operation from the inside and outside of the door as is obtained with expensive, complicated and heavy locks.
With these ends in view, myinvention consists in a'lock having certain details ofconstruction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The plate A, and case B, of myimproved lock are of ordinary construction, and secured together by a screw C, passing through the case, into a hub D, formed upon the inner face of the plate, and also constituting a center for the coupling-plate E, to turn upon. The said plate E, which constitutes one of the leading features of my present invention, is-
by preference struck up from sheet-metal, and adapted to co-operate with the latch-bolt F, the hand-lever G, the roll-back H, which receives the spindle H, of the knob J, and a key-mechanism which receives a flat key K. Thereto the said plate E, is virtually located in the midst of the members or parts above specified, being pivoted between them all. The adaptation of the said plate E, to co-operatewith the latch-bolt F, consists in constructing it with a finger e, shapedto engage with a lug or projection F, formed at the inner end of the said latch-bolt, which is hung on a stud F placed close to the selvage edge A of the plate A, at a point below the opening A therein, through which the said bolt plays. face, as shown by Fig.1 of the drawings, and when hung, as described, the leverage secured by striking its face is such that it is very readily swung back into its retired position, against the force of its operating spring L, which is engaged with its said lug F, and extends transversely under the plate E, for engagement with the projections a a, formed upon the plate A, for holding it in place.
The adaptation of the coupling-plate to cooperate with the hand-lever G, consists in providing it with an inwardly offsetting finger e, which is presented lengthwise to two lugs g 9', formed upon the bent inner end of the said hand-lever which has bearing in the plate A, and is designed to be operated from the inside of the door. The adaptation of the said coupling-plate E, to co-operate with the knob, consists in constructing it with a long finger 6 having its outer edge cut away on a circle, to receive the rollback H, which has a square longitudinal opening to receive the spindle H, of the knob J, the said rollback being provided with lugs h h to engage with the outer edge of the said finger e at the opposite ends of its cut away portion. The said roll-back is also furnished with a lockinglug h arranged midway between the lugs h h on the inside of the roll-back, and designed to be engaged by the slotted outer end of a small slide M, held in place, and confined in its reciprocation, by lugs m, formed integral 'lhe said latch-bolt has a beveled with and projecting inward from the plate A. The exposed face of the said slide is raised and recessed, as at m, to receive a short longitudinally bowed spring N, which has frictional engagement with the inner face of the case 13, whereby the said slide is retained in any place to which it may be moved by means of the button 0, the shank O whereof is pivoted to it, and plays back and forth in an elongated slot 0, formed in the plate A. It will be readily understood from this description, that when the slide is moved outward by the button 0, its slotted outer end will engage with the lug h of the rollback, and lock the same against rotation, thus preventing the knob from being used for the operation of the coupling-plate E, in withdrawing the latch-bolt, for opening the door. When, therefore, the said button is operated from the inside of the door to lock the roll-hack, the knob cannot be turned from the outside of the door to unlock the same.
The adaptation of the coupling-plate E, to co-operate with a key-mechanism, consists in its construction with an arm 6 which extends outward and downward toward a small opening a formed in the plate A, to receive the trunnion 75, formed at the end of the flat key K, before mentioned. An outwardly projecting hub P, formed integral with the case B, at the lower outer corner thereof, is located in line with the opening in the plate A, before mentioned, and affords a bearing for the key. It is provided with a short piece of wire arranged vertically within it, and constituting a ward, which takes into a notch k, formed in the key, while corresponding notches k formed at opposite points in the key nearer the outer end thereof, take into the inwardly projecting outer end of the hub, the inward extension whereof makes it" perform the function of another ward for the key. The said outer end of the hub is provided with a vertically arranged, centrally enlarged key-opening R, which permits the insertion of the key into position to engage with its said wards, and the finger e of the plate E. The said case B, is also provided ata point directly above the hub P, with a hub D, which forms an extended bearing for the rollback H.
With the lock-mechanism described, I employ an oblong escutc'heon S, adapted to be fastened to the door and forming a bearing for the knob J, and its spindle II, and containing a small rotatable key-escutcheon T, having a narrow slot T, and located in line, when the escutcheon S is in position, with the key-hub P, of the case.
It will readily be seen from the foregoing description, that a lock constructed in accordance with my invention, may either be operated from the outside of the door for retracting the latch-bolt, by turning the knob, or by the use of a key, and from the inside of the door by operating the hand-lever, and that by simply moving the button from the inside of the door, the knob may be cut out from operation, so that the latch cannot be retracted from the outside of the door, except by the use of a key. It will thus be seen that in a very simple, compact, construction, I am enabled to secure the conveniences and safeguards, which have heretofore meant a much more complicated and expensive look.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I am aware that it is old to provide a lock with a member having a manifold function in the sense that it is adapted to respond to the action of the knob or the key of the lock, and I do not therefore claim such a construction broadly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined lock and latch fordoors, the combination with the case and plate thereof, of a swinging latchbo1t, a knob, a hand lever and a key-mechanism; and a swinging coupling-plate pivoted in the case and made independent of and constructed to co-operate with all of the said parts, substantially as described.
2. In a combined latch and lock for doors, the combination with the case and plate thereof, of a swinging latch-bolt, a knob, a handlever and a key-mechanism a swinging coupling-plate pivoted in the case, and made independent of and constructed to co-operate with all of the said parts, and means for looking the knob against rotation, substantially as described.
3. In a combined latch and lock for doors, the combination with the case and plate thereof, of a swinging latch-bolt, a hand-lever, a key-mechanism, a roll-back furnished with a locking lug, a knob for connection with the said ro1l-back,a swinging coupling-plate made independent of and hung between the said members, and adapted to co-operate with all of them, and a slide provided with a button projecting from the said plate, and adapted ALBERT A; PAGE.
