Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SToVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oentralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Lock and Latch; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combined door locks and latches.
The object of the invention is to provide a combined door lock and latch in which the necessity of springs is entirely obviated.
Another object is to provide a springless latch which may be opened by turning the knob in either direction and which will close automatically when said knob is released, means being provided whereby the parts may be locked in a closed position.
A further object is to provide a lock of this character which will be simple, strong, and durable in construction, eflicient, reliable, and easily operated to open and close the same.
ith these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the lock with the cover-plate removed and showing the parts in their normal or latched position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the latch-bolt retracted by turning the knob in one direction. 'Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the latch-bolt retracted by turning the knob in the opposite direction. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts as in Fig. 1 with the latch-bar in its normal or projected position and locked in this position. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the weighted latch-bar-actuating lever. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the knob-shank barrel. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the locking-plate, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the key-ward leaf or tumbler.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the lock-casing having a removable cover-plate and formed in one edge with a latch-boltopcning 3. Slidably mounted within the casing 1 is a latch-bolt 1, the outer is brought into engagement with the keeperknob. The inner end of the latch-bolt is provided with an elongated slot 6, which is adapted to engage a guide pin or lug 7 arranged within the casing 1. 1
Pivotally mounted within the casing on a pin 8 is a weighted latch-bolt-actuating lever 9, said lever 9 being, preferably, in the form of a plate 10. On the lower edge of the plate 10 near the outer end of the same is a depending arm 11, on which is formed a laterally-projecting detent 12, and on the upper portion of said plate is secured a weight 13, which causes said lever-plate 10 to automatically drop after being raised in the operation of retracting said latch-bolt, as will be hereinafter described. To the lever-plate 10 is pivotally connected one end of an obliquely-disposed link 14:, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to the latch-bolt i.
On the plate 10 near the pivoted end of the same is formed laterally-projecting pins or studs 15 and 16, with which are adapted to be engaged a cam-lug 17 which is secured to or formed integral with the shank barrel or hub 18 of the knobs. The toe of said lug is adapted to engage beneath the pin 15, while the heel.
of said lug is adapted to engage the pin or stud 16. The arrangement of said pins or studs 15 and 16 is such that when said barrel or hub 18 is turned in either direction by the knobshank the lever 9 will be raised or lifted by said lug 17, which movement will cause the latch-bolt 4 to be retracted through the medium of the link 14, which connects said lever with the latch-bolt. As soon as the knobs are released the weight 13 on the lever-plate 10 will cause the lever 9 to drop, thereby again projecting the latch-bolt to its normal position.
In order that the lever 9 may be held in its lowered or normal position, thereby locking the latch-bolt in its projected position, asuitable locking mechanism is provided, said looking mechanism preferably consisting of a slidably-mounted plate 19, arranged in the lower portion of the casing 1. On one end of said locking-plate 19 is formed a projecting lug or finger 20, which when said locking-plate is moved in said casing will be engaged with the detent 12 on the lever-plate 10, thereby preventing said lever-plate from being raised. The locking-plate 19 is provided with a laterally-projecting pin 21, which is adapted to project into a slot 22, formed in a key-ward leaf-plate or tumbler 23. Said tumbler 23 is pivotally mounted in the casing 1, immediately in rear of the locking-plate 19. In the upper wall of the slot 22 are formed two recesses 26, with one or the other of which the pin 21 is adapted to be engaged, thereby'holding said locking-plate in one or the other of its positions within said casing.
In order that the locking-plate may be moved to lock or unlock the lever-plate 10, a suitable key is provided, the ward of which are formed to first engage and lift the tumblerplate 23, thereby releasing the pin 21 from the recesses 26 in the slot of said tumbler-plate, after which the further turning of the key will cause the ward of the same to engage the walls of a recess 29, formed in the locking-plate 19, thus shifting said locking: plate in one direction or the other to cause the same to lock the bolt-actuating lever 9, as hereinbefore described.
A lock constructed as herein shown and described will be seen to be operated entirely by means of weighted operating mechanism which causes the latch-bolt to be projected automatically after being retracted by the movement of the knobs in either direction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined latch and lock, the combination with a suitable casing, of a slotted latch-bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a weighted latch operating lever pivotally mounted in the same, a link pivoted at one end to the latch-bolt and at the other end to said lever, a cam-lug operated by the knob, and a pin on said lever, whereby said lever is lifted by turning said knob, thereby retracting said latch-bolt, a detent formed on said latch-operating lever, and a key-operated locking-plate adapted to be moved into engagemcnt with said detent, thereby preventing the lifting of said lever and thus locking said latch-bolt in a projected position, substantially as described.
2. In a combined latch and lock. the combination with a suitable casing, of a slotted latch-bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a weighted latch operating lever pivotally mounted in the same, a link connecting said latch-bolt and said lever, operating-pins arranged on the latter, a knob-shank barrel pivotally'mounted in saidcasing, a lug formed on said barrel to engage one or the other of said pins when the knob is turned in either direction, thereby lifting said lever and retracting said latch-bolt, a detent arranged on said latch-operating lever, a recessed tumblerplate, a key-actuated locking-plate adapted to be moved into engagement with said lever, thereby preventing the lifting of the said latch+operating lever and thus locking said latch-bolt in a projected position, and a keyward tumbler arranged in said casing, substantially as described.
