UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS A. SCHLECHTER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,332, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed September 13, 1892- Serial No. 445,749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS A. SCHLECI-I- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Spoons, of which the following is a desire, to gather a series of souvenir spoons which while differing materiallywill have a general uniformity of design. These very important results Isecure by means of myinvention which is fully described in connec- .tion with the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is afront view of a spoon provided with my improved handle arranged to receive a separately formed souvenir plate or badge. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a souvenir plate or badge secured in position upon the upper surface of the handle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end portion of the handle to which the souvenir plate or badgeis to be secured, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section indieating the preferred manner of securing it.
The handle A between the bowl of the spoon and the outer end is of any suitable shape and provided with any desired ornamentation. The portion B is expanded into a substantially circular form having an irregular ornamental outline within which is a flat depressed surface I) inclosed by a locking flange or clip 0. This locking flange is preferably shaped as indicated in an exaggerated form in Figs. 3 and 4, having a sharp upper edge slightly overhanging the depressed surface 19 inclosed by it.
The souvenir disk D can be formed in any suitable dies separately, with any desired impression or ornamentation, and from the same or difierent material from the spoon itself. In the drawings it is represented with a slightly concave under side and of a diameter adapted to just enter the space inclosed by the looking flange c which latter may be caused to firmly engage the edges of the disk by merely pressing the latter into contact with the flat surface b of the handle.
By means of my invention it will be seen that adecided individuality may be given to each of a series of spoons formed in the same die while at the same time maintaining a harmonious effect in a set.
While the particular construction described is considered preferable as a means of securing the separately formed souvenir plate to the spoon both because of convenience and perfection of finish yet it is obvious that it may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1. A spoon or similar article provided with a depressed surface in the upper face of the handle thereof inclosed by a locking flange and a separately formed souvenir plate or.
badge having its edges engaged by said lockin g flange to secure it within the recess, substantially as set forth.
2. A spoon or similar article provided with a circular depressed surfacein'the upperface of the handle thereof inclosed by an inwardly overhangingflange c, in combination with a souvenir plate formed concave and secured within said recess by flattening out the plate to engage the overhanging flange, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS A. SOHLEOH'FER.
