UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BECKER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HANCOCK, BECKER & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
JEWEL-SETTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,183, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed January 2, 1885. Serial No. 151,743. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BECKER, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewel-Settings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Jewel-settings formed from stock-plate have, previous to this invention, been made by stamping a plain or fiat blank out of a sheet or strip of stock-plate, then punching out the center, and then drawing up the prongs into proper shape for receiving the jewel. As thus formed, the base metal has been exposed from the interior surface of the setting and also at the edges of the prongs, and in order to conceal the base metal at these points it has been necessary to wash or color the setting. The settings made in this way have been altogether too expensive for the class of` goods to which they were applied.
The object of my invention is to cheapen and to increase the rapidity of the manufacture of this class of settings, and to produce a setting in which the base metal shall be perfectly concealed without washing or other manual means, and which shall more nearly resemble the finer class of settings than has heretofore been possible.
To the above purposes my invention consists in the peculiar and novel setting, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an upper side plan view of the blank in its first stage. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is an upper side 'plan View of the blank in its second stage.
Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the same. Fig. 5 is an upper side plan View of the blank in its third stage. Fig. 6 is a cross section of the same. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the completed setting with its jewel.
In the said drawings, A designates the body of the blank or setting, and a the extensions of the blank and prongs of the setting. a designates the continuous margin which borders the extensions a and also the body A.
.As shown in Figs. l and 2, the extensions a' line in radial alignment with the surface of the blank, and the margin extends at right angles to this surface.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the prongs a are drawn up into their proper positions, and the margins of said prongs are brought together against the inner sides of said prongs, while the margins intervening between the prongs are bent inward in alignment with the upper face ofthe body A.
, As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the margins intervening between the prongs are bent down against the rim of the body, while the center of the body is cut away, so as to form the opening c.
The blank is first stamped out from a strip or sheet of stock-plate, and, instead of being flat or plain, is formed with a continuous margin, which is raised at about right angles to the body of the blank. The prongs are now drawn up to their proper position, and the margins of the prongs are now drawn together against the inner sides of the prongs and bent between the prongs toward the body of the blank. The central opening of the setting is then formed, and at the same time the margins between the prongs are depressed inwardly against the rim of the setting. Thus all ofthe raw edges are concealed from View and none of the base metal is exposed, the plated surface lying outside of the setting and on the outside of the bent margins. It will be seen, therefore, that all hand-work in washing or coloring is dispensed with, while the setting closely resembles the ner class of settings.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An improved jewel-setting, consisting of the rim and prongs, drawn up into form from J. A. MILLER, Jr.
