SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,144, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed November 22, 1892. Serial No. 452,807. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,OHARLEs E. PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeport,
' in the county of Belknap and State of New sprinkling devices especially designed and adapted for sprinkling clothes and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sprinkler. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a modification of the manner of attaching the handle to the sections of the sprinkler head.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings,
referring to which- A designates the head or body of my improved sprinkler which consists of two sections or members a, a, each stamped or pressed from a single blank or sheet of suitable metal. The sections a, a, are preferably made in the form shown so that when their open ends are fitted one within the other a cylindrical body will be formed and the closed ends of each section are perforated or provided with any desired number of openings through which water can freely pass. The side walls of the section a are preferably tapered or flared outwardly near their free ends as at b so that when the two sections composing the head or body A are placed together such outwardly flaring portion 1) of the sides of the section a will extend over and bind closely against the sides of the section a which are inclined inwardly slightly near their outer ends as at b, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
To limit the distance which it is possible to force the section a, into the section a an annular outwardly projecting rib or bead c is preferably formed on said section a at the inner end of the inclined portion b thereof against which bead or rib the end of the section a abuts when the two sections are placed together as is clearly shown in the drawings. A bead or rib 0, similar to the head 0 on the section a of the head or body A, is formed on the sectiona of said head or body.
To the head or body A is attached a handle D which is formed preferably from a single metallic rod or wire bent upon itself at its middle and having its ends extending through apertures formed in one side of each of the sections a, a, extending across the interior thereof and soldered or otherwise suitably attached to the opposite side of said sections. A ring E is fitted over the members of the handle D, which members are spaced farther apart at their inner ends, and by moving said ring toward the head or body A the sections a, a, are firmly locked in position.
Instead of attaching the handle D to the sections a, a, as hereinbefore described the ends of said handle may be passed entirely around each section and twisted around the body thereof as shown in Fig. 3.
In using my improved sprinkler the head or bodyA thereof is immersed in water which enters said body through the perforated ends and by shaking the sprinkler the water will be sprinkled over any desired space or portion.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit or 8 5 sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, asprinkler consisting of a head, composed of two separable independent sections having their adj acent ends lapped and held together by frictional contact and their outer ends perforated, and a handle formed from a single piece and having one end attached to each of the sections composing the head, substantially as described.
