J. FOULKROD.
UMBRELLA RUNNER.
Patentd Apr. 16, 1895.
UNiTED STATES PATENT ()FFICE JOSEPH FOULKROD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL WV. EVANS, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
UMBRELLA-RUNNER.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 537,805, dated April 16, 1895.
Application filed March 31 1893. Serial No. 468,503. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH FOULKROD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Frankford, (Philadelphia,) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Runners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in umbrella runners, and notch rings thereof, the object being to provide articles of this character of improved and simplified construction; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of an umbrella runner on an enlarged scale, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the runner sleeve, and B the ring thereon. The
said ring is composed of two annular sections, each having a depending boss a concentric with the runner, the boss of the upper section fitting snugly telescopically within the boss of the lower section, said bosses having at their upper ends the flanges b which are at right angles to the axis of the runner, and are in contact with each other. The outer portions of the said flanges terminate in oppositely flaring portions so as to form the peripheral groove 0, the said flaring'portions being formed with the notches d.
The runner sleeveA near its upper endvis formed with a surrounding bead f, and the ring 13 is slipped over the sleeve down against the bead. The upper edge portion of the sleeve is then beaded or turned over as shown at g, thus securely locking the ring in place. The lower end of the sleeve has the usual flange or boss h. The two sections united as described, form a solid ring, and being secured to the exterior of the runner sleeve, leave the latter with an unbroken inner or hearing surface free from danger of injury to the stick.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
An umbrella runner having a peripheral bead near one end thereof and a ring on the runner between said bead and the said end, said ring being composed of two sections having telescoping bosses and abutting flanges, said flanges having outwardly projecting notched portions forming a groove, the said end of the runner being bent against said ring, said parts being combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH FoULKRoD.
