HAT BOX OR CASE FOR TRAVELING PURPOSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 499,132, dated June 6, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALVADOR MALO, a citizen of Mexico, and a resident of Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Boxes or Cases for Traveling Purposes, which is fully described in the following specification.

This invention relates to improvements in bat boxes so arranged and constructed that they may contain, besides various objects of necessity to the traveler, special compartments for various articles of mens head-wear, such as spherical and cylindrical top hats, and opera hats. It may also be arranged to contain militia head-wear, such as casks or helmets.

In the annexed drawings I have shown a hat box arranged to contain three hats, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section (taken longitudinally through the hats) on line 12 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a vertical section (taken transversely through the hats) on line 3-94 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3, is a horizontal section on line 567 of Fig. 2, thelower hat being removed from the box. Fig. 4., is a detail in elevation (partly in section) of a bolt for securing the ends of a strap, which holds the hat in place. Fig. 5, is a plan view (partly in section) of the same, and Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively an elevation and longitudinal section of a clasp by means of which the straps for holding the ends of the box closed are secured.

The box or case is composed of a cylindrical casing A, of metal, leather, wood or other suitable material, having at its extremities covers B and B, which are hinged at C and C. This casing may be covered with leather or other similar material. Two metallic blades or braces D, D are fixed to the interior of the casing diametrically opposite. These blades carry angle-pieces E, E, E", E', to which are fixed staples F, F, F", F. When the casing is formed of sufticiently stifi material, these blades may be omitted, and the staples fastened directly thereto. An annular partition G is secured to the casing A by its flange. Cylindrical partition H extends downwardly to the bottom of the casing A, from the inner edge of partition G, upon which rests an inclinedfiaring annular support I, held in place by a flange extending into the cylinder H, and against which the rim of the lower hat engages. Radial partitions K divide the space comprised between the cylinder H and casing A into equal compartments, each containing a receptacle or drawer, the covers M of which are movable upon hinges N, and are held closed by a strap 0 or other fastening device. A finger ring P allows the withdrawal of the boxes. Disk Q fixed to the interior of cylinder H, forms the bottom of the compartment B in which may be put a cooking apparatus, plates, &c., of special construction if desirable. In the space between the annular partition G and the inclined support I may be placed a hat brush or similar articles.

The hat which rests on the support I is held in place by a metallic strap or blade S whose bent ends are engaged in openings in theangle-pieces E, E. These straps are provided with bolts T, T which may be operated by rings U, U. To remove the hat, the bolts are pushed back from engagement with the staples F, F and the metallic strap removed.

A box V of metal or other material having its cover secured to blade S, occupies the space within the hat J. The cover of box V is movable on hinge X and is fastened in a closed position by a strap Y which engages a pin on box V.

The rim of the upper hat J rests upon the inclined cover of an annular receptacle Z which is supported upon the lugs in which rings U, U are secured, and upon two angle pieces a, a, secured to the outer casing. In the interior of this annular receptacle Z may be placed various articles, such as collars,

ends, 860. To this end the cover may be opened on hinge X when the hat J is removed. The latter is held in the same manner as hat J, by a metallic strap S, the extremities of which are engaged in openings in the angle pieces E, E and which is also provided with bolts T, T entering staples F, F, and are worked by rings U, U. The rims of the hats J and J may rest on cloth cushions or other suitable material, to prevent damages to the same.

Box V, the dimensions and form of which correspond to the interior of a spherical top hat, is supported by blade T" and occupies the space within hat J Finally, the opera hat (collapsible) J is secured to the under side of the cover-B by means of an elastic band D. The interior of the hollow cover B contains a drawer e which can be removed by handle f. A handle g on the side of casing A serves as a grip for carrying the complete case.

A single lock in casing A serves to secure the two ends or covers 13,13, and to this end each cover is provided with a strap h h having at their ends metallic plates Z, Z respectively, the former passing through handle f. The plate Z engages around the key-cylinder m and is held in place by plate Z lapping over the end thereof. The plate Z is secured by a staple n which passes through an opening in plate Z into the lock.

It is obvious that this invention is susceptible of variation so that it may be applied to cases containing different numbers and shapes of hats.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Ina hat box the combination with the main casing having removable ends, of one or moreannularly arranged removable recep tacles around the hat, and a flaring inclined annular support for the hat, above said receptacles, substantially as described.

2. In a hat box the combination with the main casing having removable ends, of one or more annularly arranged removable receptacles around thehat, asupport for the latter, a strap or band for holding the hat in place, and a receptacle occupying the space within the hat, and supported by said strap, or band, substantially as described.

3. In a hat box the combination with the main casing having removable ends of an annular partition secured to the inner face of said casing, a cylindrical partition extending downwardly from theinner edge of the annu- 4. In a hat box the combination with the main casing having a removable end of a removable receptacle or receptacles around the hat and a support for the latter,a removablc strap for holding the hat in place, and a receptacle occupying the space within the hat and supported by said strap, substantially as described.

5. In a hat box the combination with the main casing, of annular and cylindrical partitions in said casing forming a compartment around the hat, radial partitions in said compartment, removable receptacles engaging between said radial partitions, a flaring inclined support resting on said partitions and upon which the rim of the hat engages, astrap or band for holdingthe hat in place, and a receptacle occupying the space within the hat and supported by said strap, substantially as described.

6. In a hat box adapted to contain two or more hats the combination with the main casing having hinged ends, of radial compartments around the lower hat, removable receptacles within said radial compartments, an inclined support with which the rim of the hat engages, a removable receptacle around the upper hat upon which the latter rests, removable straps or bands for holding the hats in place and receptacles occupying the spaces with the hats, supported by said straps, substantially as described.
