To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES V. HUSSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarksville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Watch-Chains and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has reference to improvements in attachments for watch chains, and similar articles and has for its object to pro vide a neat and attractive device adapted to be secured to a garment of the wearer, and to which one end of the chain is attached, whereby the bar commonly used is dispensed with, and an adjustment of the chain with relation to the garment permitted.

To these ends my invention consists generally in a clip formed of two leaves which span the edge of the garment, say forinstance a vest, the outer or exposed leaf having thereon an ornamentation to render the same attractive, and in a clamping device operating in connection with the leavesto firmly secure the attachment in position.

The construction, relative arrangement and operation of the several parts will now be fully and clearly described and reference is to be had in connection therewith to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a portion of a garment with my attachment applied; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the attachment; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section; Fig. 5, a top view of a modified form of construction with parts open; Fig. 6, a similar view with the parts closed; Fig. 7, a rear elevation and Fig. 8, a central longitudinal section thereof.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 4 inclusive, the reference letters a 1) denote the leaves of the clip which are preferably formed by bending a strip of sheet metal U-shaped, whereby an open, and a closed end are formed, the former being adapted to receive the edge of the garment. The outer or exposed leaf may be suitably engraved or otherwise ornainwardly to form guides e.

The arms f f are passed through holes 19 1) formed in the inner leaf, and these arms are curved inwardly throughout theirlength as shown. The ends of these arms are bent laterally outward to form guide piecesf f which move in the guides e.

The operation is as follows: The wire clamp is first drawn outward by hand as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the attachment is then applied to the edge of the garment which enters the free opening between the leaves. The clamp is then pushed inward (see full lines Fig. 3), and the curved arms operating with the outer leaf securely bind the cloth and hold the attachment in position.

In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive is shown my attachment formed with theleaves a b, but with othermechanism for clamping the same in position. The inner leaf is formed by two longitudinal cuts, with two spring clamping pieces g g and the central portion h is bent over at its end to form a bearing for the clamp 2'. This clamp is formed of a single piece of sheet metal, one end 1" of which serves as a handle, and the other end has a slot by which is formed the pivotal part i as shown, and two projections 2' i which are bent outward and serve when the clamp is closed to force the clamping pieces g g inward against the garment.

In operation the clamp is opened as in Fig. 5, with the clamping pieces in their normal position which opens the space between the leaves and allows the attachment to be slipped over the edge of the garment. The clamp is then closed and the projections engaging the pieces 9 force them inward against the cloth and firmly hold the attachment in position.

By reason of the construction ofmy improved attachment the bar commonly used in connection with watch chains and similar devices may be dispensed with, and an adjustment of the attachment with relation to the garment and watch or other pocket is permitted.

I claim 1. In an attachment for watch chains and the like the combination of a clip adapted to engage the edge of a garment and formed of two leaves, and a clamp on the inner leaf adapted to engage the garment and hold the attachment in position.
