SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,377, dated May 30, 1893. I

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NATHAN O. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfax Court-House, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes yan d I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of ,the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, refer; ence being had to the accompanying draw-. ings, and to the letters of reference marked I thereon, which form a part of t-hisspecification.

The object of this invention is to provide a match safe peculiarly adapted to be suspended from some fixed point, and particularly adapted to be attached to a gas fixture and hang down in easy reach, so that matches can be kept near the burner and thus facil iand use the same, Iwill proceed todescribe its construction and use, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig, 2 is a central vertical section showing the match holding box in its normal position. Fig. 3 is aview showing the match holding box pulled down, the body and burned match receiver being in section; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. f

Referring to thedrawings, A denotes the body preferably of balloon shape, having an openingin the lower end to receive the match holder consisting of a round or other shaped box 13, open on one side as at O. This opening extends from near the bottom of 'the box upward sufficiently to allow a match to be easily removed,and at the same time leaving ledges, D, D, at top and bottom to preventthe matches falling out of the box when it is pulled down out of the body A.

The body A and the box B for holding matches as also the burned match receiver E are held together by an elastic cord G, extending up through the tube F and secured to the top of the" body A in anysuitable manner. the cord will be stretched so that when the box is released it will be drawn up into the body A and out of sight. j

I have shown the burned match holder E in the shape of an open umbrella turned upside-down, but I would have it understood that I do not desire to be limited to the spe-' cial shape shown as the configuration may be varied according to the desire of the man'ufacturer. what I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In a match safe, an inclosing body havinga suspending wire secured thereto at its upper closed end, in combination with a match receptacle having flanges for holding the matches, and held in the 'inclosingbody by an elastic cord, the receptacle constructed to be pulled down through an opening in the lower end of said inclosing body against strain of the elastic cord, substantially as described.-

In a match safe, an inclosing body hav-, ing a suspending wire secured thereto at its upper end, in combination with a match receptacle having flanges for holding the matches, and held in the inclosing body by an elastic cord, the receptacle constructed to be pulled down through an openingin the lower end of said inclosing body against strain of the clastic cord, and a burned match holderconneclecl with the match receptacle and arranged directly under it, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of the inclosing body A, match holding box B, receiver E, tube F, elastic cord G and suspending wire H, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
