ePECIFIGATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 498,059, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed August 6, 1892. Serial No. 442,373. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 0. DANA HUDGENS, a citizen of the United States,residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and' State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Locking System for Jails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to a system for locking jail or prisondoors from without the cage in which prisoners are confined, and its object is to avoid the personal dangers to which a jailer is exposed by moving in personal contact with prisoners while confining them to their respective cells. Its object is also to provide an inexpensive and simple method of accomplishing the above stated purpose in a manner such as to resist attempts of prisoners to damage the same so 'as'to effect an escape.
The various parts of the mechanism for accomplishing the purposes claimed herein, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a front view of a cell door and lever bars, anda sectional view of the lock lever box. Fig. 2is an edge view of lock bar of door. Fig. 3 is a front view of lock bar of door. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the door, the door jamb and the lock bar of door. Fig. 5 is a front View of the lock lever box.

In Figs. 1 and 3, a represents a cell door of grated construction, although plate or lat tice construction may be used, and which is hinged to the front walls of the cell in the usual manner. At the sides of the door a the barb is located and is attached to the cell front by the pins 19' which pass through the diagonal slots biin the bar I) and are secured at the inner end into the bar 0, and at the outer end into the bar 0 by being countersunk and riveted. The bar a is secured at one edge by the rivetsc which pass through the filling bar 01 and the cell front d.- The bar 17 is provided at its upper end with the two anti friction rollers e set on the axles e and covered in front by the guide plate e The bar I) is actuated by means of the horizontal bar fhaving on its'upper and lower edges the reversed inclined surfaces f. The bar fis in turn operated laterally by means of the lever g which is located in the closed box g on the outside of the cage. As the bar f is drawn toward the box g it slides through the guides hand the upper rolleretravels up the upper inclined surface f which at the same time lifts the lock bar B and carries it forward by the travel of the diagonal slot 12 over the pins b until the outer edge of the bar b slips past the edge of the door a from top to bottom forming a continuous fastening. When the bar f is moved in the opposite direction the lower surface f presses downward on the lower roller eand the bar b travels downward and backward until the front edge releases the door a, leaving it free to open. The inside face of the door a when closed rests against the angle piece 70 which extends from top to bottom of the door forming a stop for the same.
