To ctZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, O. DANA HUDGENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Locking System for Jails, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to a system for look: ing jail or prison doors from without the cage in which prisoners are confined, and its object is to avoid the personal dangers to which a jailer is exposed by moving in personal contact with prisoners while confining them to their respective cells. Its object is also to provide an inexpensive and simple method of accomplishing the above stated purpose in a manner such as to resist attempts of prisoners to damage the same so as to effect an escape.

The various parts of the mechanism for accomplishing the purpose claimed herein, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 shows a front view of corridor door and lock box, and levers for locking the door. Fig.2 is a section of corridor door, jamb, lock bar, and portion of lock lever box. Fig. 3 is a front view of the lock bar of corridor door, showing the end of the lever for operating the same.

The door n in Fig. 1, of the prisoners corridor into which the cells open is locked by the bar or having the diagonal slots 0 and covered by the bar 0 to which the pins 0" are secured at one end and to the plate p at the other end. The bar 0' is-also secured to the plate 1), by the rivets 19' passing through the plate 1), and the filling bar p". The bar at is operated up and down in looking and unlocking the door a by the lever 7" having the rounded end -r' which works in the notch r" in the back edge of the lock bar a. The other end of the lever 0' has a crank handle .9 which reaches the full depth of the lockbox perpendicular to the face of the lever r so that when the door 8 of the lock box g is closed, the end of the handle 8 will touch the inner face of the door 8.

\Vhen the door a is locked the dog If is thrown down as is shown and holds the lever r in the locked position. As a means of preventing the jailer from closing the door 3 of the lock box g and forgetting to lock the corridor door at, a plate t is attached to the inner face of the door .9 having in it the hole i. The plate 25 is set in such aposition that it is concentric with the movement of the lever handle 8, and the hole t" is so located that when the lever 1" is in the locked position, the end of the handle 3 will pass into the hole 25" when the door 3 is closed. If the lever r is not in the locked position the end of the handle .9 will strike the plate 25 when the door 3 is nearly shut and will prevent it from closing, thus reminding the jailer that the lever r is not in the locked position. Then the lever r is in the locked position the door 3' of the lock box 9 can be closed and locked with a combination or spring lock of any suitable form.

Having thus described the various parts of my invention and their combined actions and purposes, I claim and pray to have secured by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the door at, the lock bar n having diagonal slots 0, the pins 0", the bar 19', the lever r having the rounded end 1" and the handle 8, the dog If, the lock box g, the door 5', the plate 25 having the hole t substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of the lock box 9', the door 5', with a plate 25 having hole '6 to shut upon the handle 8 of lever r, engaged with lock bar at and held in locked position by the dog If substantially as shown and specified.
