PATENT O FFICE.
GEORGE P. VOELFEL, OF SPRING GARDEN, PENNSYLVABNIA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,260, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed January 31, 1893. Serial No. 460,436. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WOELFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Garden, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Vrenches; and Ido hereby `declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
y My invention relates to an improved pipe wrench, and consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved wrench, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
To put my invention into practice I provide a handle l, having a yoke 2 formed at one end of the same, and an enlarged portion through which two openings are formed for the reception of two rivets 4 and 5. Pivoted to the rivet 4 is a bent jaw 6, serrated at its inner face 7, and provided with a rearwardly eX- tending portion S, provided with a slot 9 to engage with a spring 10. G This spring is loosely attached at one end to the slot 9, and extending rearwardly is coiledat 11, several times about a rivet 14, and then brought forward with a straight portion-12 and attached by means of a hook to a rivet 13, passed transversely through the yoke 2. Attached in the yoke 2 by means of the rivet 5 is a piece l5 which forms the other jaw, and is capable of moving about its pivotal point.
By means of a wrench constructed as described large and small pipe may be operated on, as the jaws will spring apart to permit the said pipe to enter between, and when the wrench is moved in one direction the jaws come toward each other and lock themselves tightly about the pipe thereby providing a wrench that requires no setting or adjusting to fit various sizes of pipe. By means of the eccentric shape'of the inner jaw 15, the same may be turned to accommodate the wrench to very large or small pipes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described wrench, consisting of the handle l, the yoke 2 the bent jaw 6 serrated at its inner face 7 and pivoted by means of a rivet 4 to the said yoke, the rearwardly extending portion S provided with a slot 9, the spring l0 constructed and arranged as described for operating the said jaw, and the eccentric jaw pivoted by means of a rivet 5 to the yoke and arranged adjacent to the main jaw, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 11th day of January, A. D. 1893.
GEORGE P. VOELFEL. [L.S.]
In presence of- M. E. HARRIsoN, JAs. J. MoAnEE.
