WIRE-FENCE GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,485, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed September 29, 1892. Serial No. 4471 1 (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN PATRICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Wheatland, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fence Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1. is a side elevation showing the gate closed and locked. Fig. 2. is a detail view showing the latch or locking mechanism. Fig. 3. is a perspective view of a section of the gate bar showing the means for attaching the wires of the gate thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hooked lever for connecting and looking the gate to the latch post, and Fig. 5 is a front view of a section of the latch post, and of the locking lever and its supporting arm.
This invention relates to certain improvements in gates for use in wire fences, particularly barbed wire fences, where it is-desirable to have a gateway between two fields, and in which the wires of the fence may form the bars of the gate.
Referring to the drawings A may represent the hinge post of the gate, B the latch post, D a vertical bar to which the free ends of the wires W are attached, the opposite ends of the wires W being attached to the hinge post A by means of staples or other suitable means so that the wires may swing laterally in their said fastenings, the said wires forming the gate proper.
P is a plate securely attached to the latch post B at one side at about the center of the gate. Said plate has its inner body portion formed to extend at right angles with the gate to a distance equal to the thickness ofthe gate bar D, and is also formed to have the forwardly extending arm P, to the outer end of which, and to its outer side is pivotally connccted the lever L at C. The outer side of said arm P is formed with a beveled or inclined face at its point of contact with said lever as shown at r, for they purpose of throwing the outer end of said lever away from the gate and post B when said lever is raised, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 5, so that the said lever will not come in contact with the gate or said post when it is raised and lowered. Said lever L terminates at its inner. end in the upturned hook J, and at its outer end in the upturned lateral hook H.
D is a vertical bar having secured to it at one side the eye straps a to which the free ends of the gate wires W are attached. These straps are bent at right angles at their outer ends for extending around behind said bar so that great tension of saidwires will not detach them from said bar. Said bar D has also secured to it at one side and at about the center of the gate, the strap S having its forward extending end terminated by the lateral hook S which at its outer end extends downward and rearward as shown particularly in Fig. 2. When it is desired to close the gate, and lock it closed, the lever Lis elevated at its outer end so that the hook J at its opposite or inner end mayhook into the hook S of the strap S as shown particularly in Fig. 2. The outer end of lever L is then brought down so as to bring the gate bar D up between the post B and arm P and bring the gate wires WV up taut, and the hook H on the outer end of said lever is hooked under one of the gate wires W as shown in Fig. 1 to hold the gate closed and looked as shown in said figure. Sucha gate may be constructed at any place throughout the length of a wire fence by simply cutting the wires at one end of a fence panel, connecting the cut off or free ends to such a bar as D provided with a hook S, and applying the hooked lever to the latch post B, substantially as shown. Said lever L is provided with a number of holes a for the purpose of changing its point of fulcrum to accommodate it to the length of the gate as may be found necessary.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
1. The combination of the posts A and B, wires W connected to post A, gate bar D, straps afor connecting said bar and wires, strap S having its outer end terminated by the lateral hook S and connected to said bar D, plate P secured to post B and having its inner end terminated by the arm 1? having the inclined portion 4', and lever L pivoted to arm P and having the hooks H and J all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wire fence gate the combination of the lateral hook S secured to the gate the arm RP, secured to the latch post 13, and the lever L pivoted to the outer end of said arm IO and having the hooks H and J substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
