Description

Nb Model.)
f T. A. GARRAHER.
GATE FASTENER. No. 504,863. Patented Sept. 12, 1893.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS A. CARRAHER, OF NEWMAN GRQVE, NEBRASKA.
GATE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,863, dated September 12,1893.
Application filed December 21, 1892. Serial No. 455,913. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. CARRAHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newman Grove, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gate fastenings; and has for its object to provide means for fastening a wire gate that will hold the gate closed and keep it from sagging.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation showing a wire gate as held closed by my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing an enlarged view of a post with my improvement attached thereto.
Referring to the several parts by letters of reference A is a wire gate 'of the usual construction in the end piece or bar of which is secured a staple B. Y
C is a post to which I attach the bar D of my fastening. To one end of this barI pivot the lever E and to the other a hook F. To the lever E I pivot a link G at e, the free end of the link being hooked to receive the staple B in the end piece.
The method of fastening the gate is as follows: It is first brought to position and the lever E is then turned as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2, which will carry the pivot point e on the opposite side of the lever fulcrum, enabling the operator to engage the hooked end of the link G with the staple Bin the end piece; when the lover is reversed it will carry the pivot point e to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus stretching the wires and securely closing the gate. When the gate is closed the lever E restsin the hook F. It will thus be seen that this method of fastening wire gates holds them securely closed, prevents sagging and that the fastening can be cheaply made and is easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved gate fastening herein described consisting of the bar-D having the lever E pivotally secured to one end and a hook F to the other, in combination with the link G secured to said lever and adapted to engage a suitable fastening on the gate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. CARRAHER.
