PATENT OFFICE'.
GATg-FAsT-ENER.
' sPEcIFICA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent-.Naf 754,357, dated March 8, 1904, i Application mea December 5,1eo3. stanno. 133,930. (No man.)
To all whom ztntay concern:
' Be it known that I, vCHARLES H. SPENCER, Y a citizen of the United States, residing at Kendall, in the county of Kearny and State vof Kansas, havel invented new and useful'Im- -proven1ents in Gate-Fasteners, of vwhich the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements. in gates for wire fences; and its object is to provide a simple, and durable device for securing the gate in closed position.
i In gates of this character ordinarily employed ing the loops thereoven, y
The object of my invention-is to provide a lit has been customary to use loops .for holding the vend bar 'of the gate tothe fence-post, the gatefbar being secured, in place byl first drawing it toward the gate-post and then placsecuring device which will dispense with the objectionable method of pulling directly upon the gate to draw it near enough to the fencepost to permit the loop to bearranged thereon.
My invention consists of'a strap which is secured to the gate-post and has' a lever pivoted toit. A loop is connected to this lever, and to fasten the ward,so.asto the gate-bar, the opposite direction,
bring the loop into position over .and then-said lever is swung in thereby drawing the 'loop' toward the gate-post and securely fastening the gate in position.
The invention also consistsin the further novel construction and combination of parte hereinafter more fully described and, claimed, 1nd illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a gate having my improved securing means applied thereto.
Referring tothe figure erence, lis the end bar of )a wire gate, and
the wires 2 yof the` gate are secured thereto inl the ordinary manner. The fence-post 3 has a wire loop 4 at its lowerend for receiving the lower end of theend b'arof the gate, this loop being of the construction ordinarily employed.- Secured to the upper end ofthe fencepost 3 is a strap 5, having an ear 6 at one end, to
which is pivoted the end of alever 7.' A loop I is loosely mounted upon 8, triangularin form,
the lever 7 at a pointy between the ends therevseen that this gate the lever is first swung outby'vnumerals of ref' ,ed at'one end to the strap,
of, and'this loop is of sufficient size to receive the upper end ot' the end bar 1.
. When it is desired to secure -the gate "in closed position, the end bar thereof is inclined, so as to permit its lower end to be readily 'nserted into the loop fi. Lever 7 isthen moved to' the position shown in dotted lines, sofasl to permit the loop." 8 to be readily placed upon he end bar 1.-". Lever 7 is'` then moved backward and downward and l draws the loop-8 toward post 3, and the down- Ward movement of this lever is stopped by contact of the loop 8 with strap 5. It Willbe. fastening means is very simple and inexpensive in construction, is formed of 5 --few parts,;and can be readily `attazyhedtoza post and operated with llittle exertion.
In the foregoing description- I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that` modilications may be made therein without departing froml the spirit' or sacrificing any of thereof, and I 'therefore re serve the right to make such changesas fairly fall within the Ascope the advantages of my invention. f, Havinglthns described the invention, what is claimed; as'new is 1.' Agate-fastener comprisingastrapadapted to be secured to a -post and having an ear at one` ,end, a lever pivoted at one end of the ear-,and an vangular'loop extending through lthe lever at-'a point between'its ends and adapt- 'ed' to receive the end bar of a gate, said loop forming'a stop .for the lever.
. .2. The combination with a fence-post having a loop at one end thereofl for the reception -of the end bar of a gate; of a strap secured to 'said post adjacent its other end, a lever pivotand a loop extending through'the lever at a pomtbetween its ends and adapted to receive the end bar of a gate, said loop forming a stopl for the lever.`
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in l presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. SPENCER.l A VVit-nesses:V I. J. C. GUY,- E. Soo'rr.`
