TRACE-CARRIER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 496,425, dated May 2, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A; MAYHALL, of Gloster, in the county of Amite and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to buckles such as are used for connecting the back band of a farm harness with the traces.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved buckle, which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to securely lock the traces in place and to firmly hold the back band.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
The improved buckle is provided with a plate A formed at one end with a hook'B adapted to be engaged by the trace, the said hook projecting from the front of the plate, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. In the opening of the plate A is pivoted a lever C, the pivots D being arranged on the sides of the plate, as shown in the drawings. The lever (J is provided with an arm E formed with an outwardly projecting lug F adapted to abut against the point of the hook B, while the lower end G of the said arm is adapted to close the lower end of the hook, thus securely locking the trace in place when engaging the hook and at the time the lever O is in position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
It is understood that the lug F and the end G of the arm E form, with the hook B, a sufficient opening to readily accommodate that part of the trace hooked on the hook B. The upper part of the lever O is made in the shape of a frame having two cross bars H and I, of which the upper cross bar H is adapted to abut on lugs J projecting from the sides of the frame A, so as to limit the rearward swinging motion of the frame of the lever O, and
. the outward swinging motion of the arm E of the said lever.
The cross bar H is slightly beveled at its top edge, and forms, with the cross bar A of the plate A, a slot K for the passage of the band or webbing of the back band, so that when the lever closes, the band or webbing is clamped between the bar H and the bar A of the plate. The end of the band or webbing is passed through the slot L formed between the bars H and I, so that the band extends to the rear of the plate A when in use. In order to securely hold this end of the band in place the bar H is formedat its lower edge with outwardly projecting teeth N, adapted to impinge on the rear face of the band passing rearward through the slot L. It will be seen thatwhen the band is in place and a pull is exerted, the band draws the lever C firmly shut, thereby increasing the clamping power of the lever on the band. It will further be seen that when the lever is closed as shown in the drawings, the part of the trace hooked on the hook B cannot become disengaged, as the said hook is closed by the lug F and the lower part G of the arms E.
In order to unhook the trace, the operator simply presses the arm E rearward, so that the lever O swings and the lug F moves away from the point of the hook B, thus permitting of unhooking the trace. If it is desired to disconnect the back band, the operator likewise swings the lever G into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to permit of conveniently removing the back band from the frame of the lever, as the bar H of the latter does not now clamp the band or webbing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A trace buckle comprising a plate A having an opening through it and provided on its outer face at its lower end with an outwardly and upwardly extending trace hook B, and the lever 0 within the plate opening and pivoted at its ends to the end walls thereof, the said lever consisting in the parallel cross bars H I having a slot L between them, the bar H having teeth on its outer side a slot K being also formed between the cross barH and the top cross bar A of the said plate A, and the arm E depending from the cross bar I and having a lug F projecting outwardly toward the upper end of the hook B, substantially as set forth.
2. A trace buckle consisting in the plate A having an opening through it and provided at the upper corners of its opening with stops J and on its outer face at the lower end of the opening with an outwardly and upwardly projecting hook B, and the lever 0 within the plate opening and pivoted at its ends to the end walls of the opening; said lever consisting in the parallel cross bars 11 I separated \VILLIAM A.
