SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,183, dated April 25, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide a collapsible ironing table that will not only be very rigid when in use, but which may be readily adjusted to various elevations.

Said invention therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 represents aside elevation of my improved ironing table with parts broken away and in section, and Figs. 2 to at inclusive are sections respectively taken on lines 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4; of the preceding figure.

Referring by letter to the drawings A A, represent a pair of legs forming part of the table, these legs being united by upper and lower braces B, O, the latter brace being shown in the form of a round. Another pair of legs D,D, also forming part of the table are united by upper and lower braces E, F, this latter brace being similar to the one 0 above specifled, although at a greater elevation.

Passed through the legs A, A, is a transverse bolt G engaged by slotted plates II that extend lengthwise of said legs and bear against the outside of the same, these plates being held in the position to which they may be vertically adjusted, by a set nut I on said bolt.

J ournaled in the upper ends of the vertically adjustable plates H, H, is a half-round barJ rigid on the under side of a press-board K, and the latter is also provided upon its under side with a longitudinal cleat L for engagement with a corresponding seat in a headblock M that is fast on a strap N, the latter having depending slotted ends parallel to the legs D, D, and engaged by a bolt P passed through said legs and provided with a set-nut Q, but it is obvious that the depending ends of the strap are analogous to the plates above .described in connection with the half-round bar and therefore it is possible to omit said strap and rigidly connect the ends of the headblock to said plates.

By means of vertically adjustable devices herein specified, the press-board may be set at various elevations above a standard height incident to the length of the supporting legs, and said press-board being pivotedat one end it may be swung up to engage a skirt, shirt or analogous garment, but when in its normal position it is held against possible lateral play by the engagement of the cleat L with the seat in the head-block M hereinbefore set forth. A transverse cleat R on the upper side of the pivot-end of the press-board serves as a guard to prevent asmoothing iron from fa1ling off said board when the latter is tilted for the purpose of positioning a skirt, shirt, or analogous garment thereon.

Loose on the round or brace F of the legs D, D, are bars U, U, that also loosely engage the bolt G passed through the legs A, A, blocks 1) being arranged on said bolt to space the bars apart from each other and adjacent legs. Intermediate of their extremities the bars U, U, are joined by a roundl that constitutes a pivot for another bar S havinga notch cat one end for engagement with the lower round or brace 0 between the legs A, A, and a reverse notch 01 at its other end for engagement with a round or bar V between the legs D, D. To prevent the bar S from having too much play on its pivot I employ a bail W connected at its ends to said bar above the roundVthat is intermediate of the legs D, D. The bars U, U, and S extend in opposite directions on both sides of the pivot-round T and form a very strong brace for the two pairs of legs when the table is set up, and while the rigidity is increased by having two of the bars U, it is pos sible to omit one of the same without departure from my invention.

To collapse the table, the bar S is disengaged from the rounds O, V, and the legs swung down to extend in the same direction, said bar S and the ones U, U, being provided with notches e that come parallel with each other to engage said round V in order that the several parts may fold as close together as possible.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a press-board, a pair of legs pivotally connected to the pressboard, another pair of legs free of said board, a diagonal brace pivotally connected to both pairs of legs, another diagonal brace that crosses the first and is pivoted thereto, and a round between each pair of legs for engagement with a corresponding notch in the latter brace, substantially as set forth.
