UNITED STATES GEORGE W. REED, OF DERBY, VERMONT.
EATENT OFFICE.
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,894, dated March '7, 1893.
Application filed August 6. 1892. Serial No. 442,314. (No model.)
To a/ ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. REED, of Derby, in the county ot' Orleans and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders Or frames for sustaining rolls of toilet-paper such as are used in water closets, &c., but it may be em tion-on line a: Fig. l.
` vided with inclined slots B', the inclination being upward from the rear. The lower edges of these slots are provided with teeth b, while the upper edges are plain.
D is the roll of paper wound upon the core E. Gear wheels or pinions H are secured by means of screws or bolts h h to the opposite ends of this core, and said Wheels H lie within the slots B in engagement with the teeth b.
When it is desired to remove a piece of paper from lthe roll, the end D is pulled down, thus unwinding the paper and rotating the roll D. The rotation of the roll causes the pinions to rotate and travel up the slot B over the teeth b until the paper brings up against the serrated edge C of the front bar C, the parts taking the positions shown in broken lines in Fig. l. The end D of the paperis then torn OI against the edge C', and the released roll D rolls back into the position shown in full lines in Fig. l.
In order to prevent the core from 'being removed froin the holder until-the paper has been used up,.I extend from the bolt h a hook I which projects into a suitable opening e in the core. Upon the periphery of the core I screw at f a plate K Whose end K bends at right angles into an opening e in the core and engages the hook I, said opening e connecting with the opening e. Thus it will be seen that the screw f cannot be reached until the paper has been removed and hence the core cannot be removed from the holder.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters v Patent, is-
The paper-holder described, comprising the back-plate, arms provided with upwardly inclined slots B having teeth out in their lower edges, serrated front plate O, and core provided rigidly with gear wheels H lying in said slots and engaging the teeth b therein, substantially as set forth. 4
