Description

A. 0; M0033 PAPER HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patented Apr..29
N. m'zxs. Mmhognom mil-Inna, n'la UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ALBERT CANDY MOORE, or BELLOWS FALLS,VERMONT.
PAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,618, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed December 26, 1883. -(l\*o model.)
I To aZZ whom it may concern:
' to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a paper-holder containing my invention, the nature of which is defined in the 1 claims hereinafter presented.
The holder is to support a roll of paper and to enable portions thereof to be separated from the remainder in manner and by means as described and as occasion may require.
The holder is represented as adapted to such a roll, which in the drawings is shown at A as wound upon a tube or cylinder, a, of wood,
into the ends of which the journals b b of the legs 0 c of the bail B are inserted. This bail, formed of wire, bent as shown, has pivoted to it, at its middle, a screw, 0, or some other proper device for fastening it to a wall.
A combined knife, "e, 'and brake f, formed of sheet metal, bent as represented, is shown' at D as securedto the bail by arms at d, ex: tending from them and pivoted to it, so as to enable the brake to rest against the periphery of the roll of paper. The brake makes an angle of about ninety degrees with the'knife,
whose cu'tting-edgeis its outer edge, the blade of the knife being by preference bent upward, as shown, just in rear of the said cuttingedge. vThisbrake with the arms may be in one piece of wire, or it may be the back of the knife; but it is preferable to have it formed paper sufficiently from the guide, the paper is to be borne down upon the cutting-edge of the knife so as to depress the knife and crowd the brake against the roll, whereby the said roll will be stopped from revolving while the paper may be severed or cut by the knife; The part of the paper that may lap on the knife will remain intact, ready for being seized, for the purpose of drawing forward over the knife more of the paper of the roll, such roll, while paper is being so drawn from it, turning freely on the journals of the bail.
I do not claim a paper-holder constructed and to operate as represented in the United States Patent No. 193,175, my paper-holder having 1 one or more appliances not incident thereto. Nor do I claim paper-holders made as rep-' resented in the United States Patents Nos. 248,323 and 285,398, for in neither of such patents is a brake shown as fixed to the knife or cutter, and by it caused to bear against the roll of paper while a partof such roll is being severed from the rest by the knife. I claim 7 1. The knife connected to the bail and provided with a brake to extend from it, the said knife, against the roll of paper, and to be borne againstit by the draft of the strip of paper on the knife while the latter may be in the act of separating the paper, all being substantially as set forth. j
2. The bail provided with the guide and knife, arranged as set forth, and with abrake to extend from the knife against the roll of paper, all being substantially and to operate as represented.
3. The combination of the bail provided ALBERT CANDY MOORE.
