Description
(N 0 Model.)
S. WHEELER. PAPER HOLDING DEVICE.
Patented Mo. 4
UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH \VHEELER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
PAPER-HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,735, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed January 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom L25 may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH WHEELER, of A1- bany, in the county of Albany, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for holding rolled wrapping or other paper, which is provided with a straight-edge along which the paper may be torn, as hereinafter specified.
My invention has for its objects to provide a simple and efficient device, which may be constructed of a single piece of metal at little expense, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved device, showing a roll of paper secured therein; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same.
The letter A indicates a frame, preferably made of cast metal, open at one side, as indicated, and provided with segmental lugs B, which, with the forward side of said frame, retain the roll, permitting it to rotate freely, so as to be unwound as desired. side of the frame is formed by a transverse bar, which is provided wit-h a straight-edge, E, which sets upon the free end of the roll and forms a guide, by means of which the paper of the roll may be torn accurately across its width into sheets of desired size.
tended to be placed within, with its free end extending under the straight-edge. When a The forward sheet is desired for use, the free end is seized and the sheet drawn out to the proper distance,
the roll unwinding for the purpose. The sheet is then torn off, using the straight-edge as a guide, in the usual manner.
It will be perceived that as constructed the device requires no hinges or other connections, being all in one piece of suitable shape strong and durable.
It has come to my knowledge that boxes constructed of several distinct pieces have been made for the purpose of holding passage-tickets, and that such devices have also been made for containing paper rolls but in such latter instances they have been provided with rollers and journals for supporting the paper, and are thus distinguished from my cheap and simple frame constructed of a single piece, as herein shown and described.
I am also aware that boxes constructed in different pieces have been employed without rollers for holding paper-rolls; but such I do not claim, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for holding roll-paper, consisting of a cast-metal frame, A, having its forward part curved and provided with a cutting-edge,
E, and having at its rear the segmental lugs B, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of De cember, 1882.
SETH WHEELER. Witnesses:
E. J. WHEELER, R. M. HAMILTON.
