Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE..
HENRY L. MEsEavEY, oF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WASHING-ROLLER T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY L. MESEEVEY, of Boston, in the county ot' Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Hand VVashing-Roller, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mak ing part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' my improved hand washing-roller. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the center of the same.
Hand Washing-rollers for rubbing clothes on a wash-board, as heretofore constructed, have consisted of two or more rollers hung in arigid and unyieltling frame provided with a handle; butthese were liable to the objections that when not held perfectly flat, or when used on clothes lying unevenly or in bunches, all of the rolls would not be brought into contact with the clothes at the same timethus diminishing the amount of rubbing-surface and increasing the labor.
My invention has for its object to overcome this difficulty, and consists in one or more revolving frames attached to a. suitable handle and carrying a series ot' rollers, whereby Iam enabled to utilize alarge amountofrubbing-surface,whether the clothes lie hat or in bunches, and4 thus perform the same amount ot' work with less labor than heretofore.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it Out.
In the said drawings, A represents the handle, between the side pieces, a, of which are hun g the revolving-frames B, which are made somev what in the form ofa spool, and are provided with screw-pins b. which revolve in the side pieces, a. Each of these frames B carries a series of rolls, C, of wood or other suitable material, which have their bearings in the ends of the frame. In rubbing this implement over the surface of the clothes otra Wash-board the frames B are caused to revolve, and a number ofthe rolls C are brought into use at once ou the bunches or inequalities on the surface of the clothes, thus presentingand utilizing much more rubbingsurface at once, and causing the work to be performed in a better and more eX- peditious manner than heretofore.
By the employment of the above-described implement hotter watercan beused than Where the clothes are rubbed by hand, and the Washing can be performed in much less time.
It is evident that instead of two revolving frames B provided with rollers being employed, as above described, one revolving frame only, carrying a series of rolls and attached to a handle, may be used without departing from the spirit of myinveution. I prefer, however, to use two, as a greater amount of rubbing-surface is thereby presented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hand washing-roller consisting of one or more revolving frames, B, carrying a series of rolls, C, in combination with a handle, operating substantially as described.
