Description

Unirse Sarns ATENT Prion.
JOHN E. LEAVITT, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CLINTON A. PATTEN, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARNI ENT-SHAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 492,514, dated February 28, 1893.
Application led October 6, 1892. Serial No, 447,995. (Ilo model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. IinAvIrr, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garment-Shapers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a Shaper for garments, and is especially adapted to be used with trousers having a longitudinal crease or bend whereby the crease or bend at the bottom of the leg portions may be maintained in the desired shape until positively changed.
In accordance with my invention, each leg of the trousers is provided near the bottom, and preferably at ghe front and rear portions, with a Shaper which may be sewed or otherwise Secured to the legs of the trousers. The Shaper referred to, is made of metal, which may be a thin strip of copper, tin, or other metal capable of being bent or shaped to conform to and maintain the crease in the trousers. The metal strip may and preferably will be secured to the trousers legs by the usualpieces of leather, 110W commonly secured to the back of the trousers leg on its inner side, as a protector against Wear upon the back of the boot or shoe of the wearer.
The particular features in which my invention consists will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1, represents in front elevation a pair of trousers provided with Shapers embodying my invention. Fig. 2, a detail in perspective of the Shaper shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3, an edge View of the Shaper shown in Fig. 2, the said Shaper being elongated, and Fig. 4, a modified form of Shaper.
The trousers A, which may be of any usual or desired construction, are provided, as herein shown, with ua longitudinal crease a in each leg a a2. Each leg, in accordance with my invention, is provided on its inner side near its bottom with one or more Shapers B, Shown separately in Figs. 2 and 3, there preferably being two Shapers to each leg, as shown in Fig. l, located at the front and rear, but if desired the rear Shaper may be discarded.
The Shaper B is made of substantially thin metal, preferably as a short strip or piece b, which is attached to the trousers leg by apiece or strip b', preferably of leather, which is sewed to the trousers, but instead of leather, any other suitable non-metallic material, Such as cloth, may be used. The metal strip b may beinserted through suitable slits in the leather .piece b', so that the leather embraces the metal strip and firmly holds it., and the said leather strip may be sewed or otherwise fastened to the trousers legen its inner side, and when fastened as described, it will be seen, that the metal strip is securely held in a pocket formed by the trousers leg and the piece of leather. Instead of a single Slitted piece of leather, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, I may employ two pieces of leather b3 b4', between which the metal strip b is located, the pieces b3 b being sewed together to form the pocket for the metal strip, and then sewed or otherwise attached to the trousers. The Shaper may be bent to conform to the prevailing style, and as herein shown, the said Shaper is bent to maintain the crease a. The Shaper is especially useful when the bottoms of the trousers legs become wet, and at such time, the Shaper holds the shape of the trousers legs.
I have herein represented the Shaper as used on trousers, but I do not desire to limit myself in this respect, as the said Shaper may be used to advantage on the sleeves of coats.
I claim-- l. The combination with a garment of the class described having a crease or bend therein, of a Shaper adapted to permanently retain said crease or bend and comprising a pliable metal Strip secured to the garment about the bend or crease, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a garment of the class described having a crease orbend therein, of a Shaper adapted to retain said crease or bend and comprising a pliable metal Strip bent to conform to the said crease and a fibrous strip secured to the inner Side of the garment about the bend or crease and serving to secure the metal Strip to the trousers, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a garment of the In testimony whereof I have signed my class described havinga crease or bend therename to this specification in the presence of Io in, of a Shaper adapted to retain said crease two subscribing Witnesses. or bend and comprising a pliable metal strip, and a fibrous strip having slits through which' JOHN E' LEAVITT the metal strip is inserted and secured to the Witnesses: garment about the bend or crease, substan- JAS. H. CHURCHILL, tially as described. J. MURPHY.
