4LAMP-STAND AND CLOTHES-DRIER COMBINED. t

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,244, dated August 8, 1865.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN DONALDSON, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and nseful Improvement in a Combined Lamp-Stand and O10thes-Bars or Drying-Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my combined stand and drier, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same, the arms of the drier in both [igures beingso disposed as to show a t'ew of the various ways in which they can be arranged.

It is the object of my invention to so arrange the candle or lamp stand as that it can be used alone or combined with adjustable arms on which to dry clothes, and thus render a single piece capable ot' serving all the purposes of two separate articles of furniture; and to this end my invention consistsin so combiningdrying-arms with a candle or lamp stand as that the former can be spread at any radial distance apart and adjusted to any height. upon the pedestal of the stand. v A

The upper portion of the pedestal A is grooved out to secure the stem B, which is made fast to the under side of the lamp-stand O and holds it nearly centrally over the pedestal. The stem B has a long slot, b, which receives a set-screw, c, to regulate the height of the sta-nd and adjust it, as desired. It is obvious that the form ofthe stem orpedestal may be varied at pleasure, or that one tube sliding within another may be made to project a slot from each of these holes through the plate ot' a size that will neatly fit the stem of the screw. I now insert into the plate D and fasten securely two projecting tlanges, E

-and E', between which I pivot securely any suitable number ofdrying-arms F desired, and when the plates D, with theirdrying-arms thus attached, are united to the pedestal or stem by passing the holes in the plates over the heads of the screws and dropping the slots upon the stems, it is obvious that the dryingarms may be radially arranged in any desired manner without disturbing the position ot the stand or getting out of' place.

What I claim as my invention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. The combination of a lamp-stand with a drying-frame, arranged and operatingsubstantially as described, for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination ofthe slotted stem carrying the dryingarrns with the screws on the pedestal or stem, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
