PORTABLE BINDER FOR SHEET-MUSIC, 80C.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,238, dated February 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIA SAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residingat Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake, Utah Territory, have invented certain Improvements in Portable Binders for Sheet-Music and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of binders for sheet music and the like which are adapted to be folded about the contents so as to form a neat package, in the form of a book, and which may be readily unfolded so as to expose the contents in the flat, and the object of my invention is to generally improve the construction of this class of binders, as well as to provide means whereby the sheets may be securely held in place, so as to prevent their falling out and becoming lost.

My invention will be hereinafter fully described and its novel features carefullydefined in the claims.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a binder embodying my improvements in which drawings- Figure 1 is a general view, on a small scale showing the inside of the binder in the flat. Figs. 2, 8 and 4, are enlarged fragmentary detail views, illustratingthe device for securing the sheets in place. view of the binder, showing it as it appears when folded, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the folded binder, represented as filled. These views are on the same scale as Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail view to be referred to hereinafter.

My improved binder as seen in Fig. 1, in the flat, is composed of a single piece or backing of flexible material, as canvas, covered on both sides preferably with leather or the like, and is creased at certain points so as to form two sides, A, B, two backs O, D, and a cover flap E. The flap E is provided with a strap 6, adapted to take through a slit a, in the side A, as represented in Fig. 5, whereby the binder is held in its folded position. On the outside of the side A is formed a row of pockets, a, a a adapted to receive a pencil and cards or memoranda, and the flapE is wide enough to cover these pockets entirely when strapped down, whereby the loss of articles deposited therein is prevented.

Fig. 5 is an outside face On the back 0 is provided a handle a, clearly seen in Figs. 5 and 6, whereby the holder may be conveniently carried in the hand and on the inside, the back 0 is provided with the devices for securing the sheets in place in the binder, which I will now describe, referring more particularly to the first four figures of the drawings.

Across the top of back O is set a plate f, of stout metal securedthereto bymeans of prongs f stamped therefrom as seen in Fig. 2 and from the center of this strip is stamped up a strut or bridge f rising slightly above the upper surface of said plate. On this bridge is hinged a series of wire retainers g, by means of eyes or loops 9 bent in the ends thereof and said retainers are bent downward, slightly or toward the back 0, as seen in Fig. 2, being, by preference of light spring steel.

Across the lower end of the back 0 is set a plate h, secured thereto in a manner similar to plate f, and this plate h, has stamped or bent from its edge at right angles, a row or series of hooks h, into which the ends of the retainers g, are adapted to be pressed and securely held, a slight bend or head g, being formed at the end of said retainers to prevent their involuntary withdrawal as well as to provide a hold for the fingers in manipulating the device. The separate sheet or several sheets together may be divided at or near the center and the retainer g, brought down between them, and its end slipped into the hook it, when it will be securely held in the holder, the curvature in the retainer allowing sufficiently for the ordinary differences in the number of sheets bound by one wire.

At the four corners of the sides A and B, are formed ears or tabs 1), which serve to receive single sheetsof music or the like, and

at the edge of said sides I prefer to provide light clamps b, b, the construction of which will be readily understood from Fig. 7. By raising these clamps a sheet or sheets of loose music may be inserted beneath, and will be securely held in position While being read.

My invention, as herein shown, is designed and particularly well adapted to serve as a holder for sheet music, but it will be readily seen that it is susceptible of considerable modification to adapt it for other purposes, and therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement shown.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a binder for sheet music and the like, a back, retainers secured to said back, the retainers at that portion designed to hold the sheets having a downward bend toward the said back; substantially as described.

2. In a binder for sheet music and the like, a back, retainers secured at one end to said back, and hooks projecting from said back of a number equal to the number of retainers adapted to secure the free end of said retainers; substantially as described.

3. In a binder for sheet music and the like, a back, plates secured to said back, one of said plates having retainers permanently secured to it and the other of said plates being provided with projecting hooks equal in nu n1- her to the number of retainers, said hooks being adapted to secure the free ends of the retainers; substantially as described.

4. In a binder for sheet music and the like, a back, retainers secured at one end thereto, and bars of a number equal to the number of retainers projecting from said back, each of said bars being provided with a hook; substantially as described.

5. In a binder for sheet music and the like,
