W. .DEMUTH. TOBACCO PIPE.
No. 491,409, Patented Feb. i, 1893.
WITNESSES: INVENTOH:
jlaw/ hQZZiamfiimul/i M 42% BY UNITED STATES PATENT l l lEe WILLIAM DEMUTH, OF NEW YORK, NJY.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,409, dated February '7, 1893.
Application filed October 15, 1892. Serial No. 448,994. (No model.)
To (l/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DEMUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacoo'lipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel tobacco pipe the bowl of which will resume an upright position it laid upon its side and which is not likely to upset and spill the contents.
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the tobacco pipe hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a sectional side elevation of a tobacco pipe embodying my invention, and Fig. 2, is a section taken on the line oa00, Fig. 1.
In the drawings the letter B indicates the pipe bowl which is spheroidal in shape. The pipe bowl is provided with the usual mouth A and with n stein D which joins the bowl at the base thereof. in the base of the spheroidal bowl is inserted aweightflpreferably forward of lead pouredin a molten state into the stem to the inner end thereof and when the lead sets or liardens it is bored out to form a channel for the passage of smoke from the interior of the bowl to the tip of the stem. The base of the bowl B is provided with a flattened surface 0 to give the bowl a firm seat on a table or other support. iVhen the pipe is resting on a table or other surface it will normally stand upright and it the bowl be laid on its side the downward pull of the weighted base will cause the bowl to resume an upright position, whereby the contents of the pipe will not be likely to spill which is of advantags in that it avoids soiling or injuring furniture or other articles by ashes, tobacco or fire from the pipe bowl. The extension of the weight into the pipe-stem is desirable in that if the pipe is laid on its side the stem where it joins the bowl is elevated while the tip or mouth piece rests on the table and consequently the weight acts to pull the inner end portion of the stem downward and materially aids in causing the bowl to assume an upright position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a tobacco pipe having a spheroidal bowl provided with a pipe stern and a weight inserted into the base'of the bowl and projecting into the pipe stem for causing the bowl to normally stand in an upright position, substantially as described.
2. A tobacco pipe having aspheroidal bowl provided with a pipe stem, a flattened base and a weight inserted into the base of the bowl and projecting into the stem for cans ing the bowl to normally stand upright, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing JAMES PETTIGREW, Josnrn M. ALEXANDER.
