TOBACCO-PIPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,769, dated May 2, 1893.

Be it known that I, WILL F. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.

This invention relates to pipes for smoking tobacco, and has for its objectto construct a pipe which shall be pleasant to smoke, which can be cleaned easily and eectually, and which can be used out of doors in a strong wind and in wet weather, without scattering or extinguishing the fire.

With these objects in view, my invention consists in the base burning pipewhich will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the mouth piece, B the stem, and C the bowl of my improved pipe. The two former may be of any desired length, shape, and material, my improvement residing in the construction of'the bowl, which depends from the stem. That is to say, instead of having the aperture b through the stem open up into the bowl at or near its bottom, as usual, the said channel or aperture opens into the bowl near its top or upper end, so that when the stopper E is placed in the open end of the bowl, the mouth of the channel b will be just below the stopper, the latter being in the nature of a plug which will fit tightly into the bowl.

To use my improved pipe, the stopper is removed, and the bowl is illed with tobacco in the usual manner. The stopper is then inserted, the pipe placed in the mouth, and a light is applied to the metal tube a. By now sucking air through the pipe, the dame will be drawn through the duct d c into the bottom ofthe bowl and ignite the tobacco, air being fed to the burning tobacco-through said duct, while the smoke is drawn through the stem in the usual manner. It will be seen that the [ire and ashes, being in the bottoml of the bowl and not exposed,are not affected by wind or wetweather. Burning from the bottom upward, the fire will burn the bowl clean, and the residue will'settle on the under side of the stopper, from which it may readily be removed, instead of in the bottom of the bowl, where access to it is not so easy, so that the pipe will always smoke sweet and clean.

vHaving thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a tobacco pipe of the described type, the combination with the bowl and the shoulder or offset integral therewith having branched duct c d, of the metal tube a inserted into the vertical branch of the duct and extending above the mouth of the same; substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
