' PATENT OFFICE.
LUDVVIG D. KOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,942, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed January 26,1904. Serial No. 190,639. (No model.) I
To (0Z0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG D. KooH, a'citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to smokers articles such as pipes, cigar and cigarette holders, &c.and has for its'object the provision of an article of this character wherein the smoke-passage may be opened and completely exposed for cleaning.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in apipe or the equivalent wherein the sections or section containing the smoke-conduit is formed of four longitudinally-divided parts, two of said parts fitting.
within the other parts in such a manner as to break the joints, forming a tightly-closed passage when such parts are assembled.
My invention also involves certain novel and useful combinationsor arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operations, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
1n the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a side elevation of a pipe in which my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view at line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional .view at lineb b of Fig. 1, the stem of the pipe at each side not being shown. Fig. 4 is a .cross-sect1onal view showing the exterior surface of the portions forming the smoke-con- .duit as square instead of round.
Similar numerals of reference wherever they occurindicate corresponding partsin all the figures. a
1 1 are the exterior portions of a pipe-stem divided at 3 and hollowed for the reception of the interior portions of the stem 4:, the same being divided at 5.
6 is the smoke-conduit through the center of the stem.
7 is a drip-cup screwed onto the bottom of the stem at the bend, the same being threaded at 8 for its reception.
.11 is a passage from the smoke-conduit 6 into the cup 7. s
9 is the mouthpiece, shaped and curved in any desired manner. The parts are firmly connected together by means of encircling rings or collars 2.
10 is the bowl of the pipe, screwed into place at the lower extremity of the stern.
1n assembling the parts the twoinner pieces .4 are placed together and then the outer pieces put around the inner portion, the divisions between the parts being at right angles to each other, so as to break the joints and render the ingress of air or the escape of smoke, &c., therefrom impossible. For convenience the difi'erent parts of the stem and mouthpiece are made separate and are connected together by screwing the one within the other,
as is well understood, and in each instance where there are divided sections of the device the encircling rings 2 are placed thereover.
Itwill thus be observed that I provide a pipe wherein the entire smoke-conduit may be open for thoroughly cleansing and the parts disconnected or reunited at pleasure and avoid all danger of leakage.
I have shown the construction as applied to a pipe only; but it is obvious that the same may be used. in a. cigar or cigarette holder without departing from the spirit of my in- Vention.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. In a tobacco-pipe, or the equivalent, a smoke-conduit sectionformed of'four longitudinally-divided parts, two of said parts itting Within the other parts in sucha manner,
as to break joints, substantially as shown and described- Y 2- In a device of the character herein specifled, a smoke-conduit section, formed offour longitudinally-divided parts, two of said parts fitting within the other parts in such a manner as to break oints, in combination with means for retaining such parts in position,
substantially as shown and described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of January, A. D. 1904.
LUDWIG D. KOCH.
Witnesses: I
A. M. PIERCE, KAREN LARSEN.
