To all wiz/om t may concern:

Be it known that l, LE ROY DAUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Fails; and l do hereby declare 'the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a new and improved butter package, and more especially to improved means for sealing the same air tight, and to this end it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinatt-er fully described and afterward definitely pointed out inthe claims, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved butter package; Fig. 2 a top plan View thereof, and Fig. 3 a vertical central section thereof.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the vessel intended to contain the butter and is constructed of stone or earthenware, or any other suitable material. Said vessel at its top is provided with an annular flange a, and upon its interior with an annular shoulder a', for the purpose hereinafter described.

Upon the upper side of the cover B is secured a cross bar D which strengthens the cover and prevents the same from being split, said cross bar preferably be ing provided with a wear plate CZ for the purpose hereinafter made apparent.

The bent ends f', f', ot' the clamps are slotted, as at f2, f2, through which slots pass screws G, G, which enter screw threaded apertures in the bar E. The clamps F, F, can be adjusted toward or from each other to adapt them to vessels of dilferent sizes, and when so adjusted are maintained in place by tightening the screws G1 G. The bar E, at its center, is provided with a screw threaded aperture e within which is fitted a thumb screw H, which, when screwed down bears against the wear plate CZ on the cross bar D and forces the cover B tightly down upon the rubber gasket C resting upon the shoulder a ot' the vessel, and closes said vessel airtight. The bar E, if preferred, may be made of wood, and in this case I prefer to provide the aperture e of the bar E with a metallic bushing e2, screw threaded interiorly, for the reception of the thumb screw H. Formed integral with the clamps F, F, are ears l, l, to which are secured the ends of a bail J, affording a convenient means for carrying the package.

By my improved device the package is very quickly closed air tight and the clamps are also adapted to lit vessels of Varing sizes.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a butter package, the combination with the vessel A provided with a ange u., and its cover B, of the fastening mechanism consisting of the bar E recessed upon its upper opposite ends and the clamps F, F, turned inwardly at their lower ends, as at f, to engage the flange a and bent inwardly at their upper ends, as at f2, and slotted as shown, and screws passing through said slotted ends of the clamps and engaging said bar E, substantially as described and for the purpose specied.

2. In a butter package, the combination with the vessel A provided with a langea and its cover B, of the fastening mechanism consisting of the bar E having adjustably secured to its opposite ends clamps F, F, provided with inwardly turned ends f,f, adapted to engage the vsaid flange a, and the thumb screw H, tapped through the bar E and engaging the cover B, the clamps F, F, being provided with ears I, I, and having secured therein the ends of a bail J, substantiail y as described.
