Be it known that we, SAMUEL A. STONE, residing at the town of Fennimore, and JOHN PHILIPPS, residing at the city of Lancaster, in Grant county, in the State of lVisconsin, both citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Brackets or Supports for Foot-Railings to Counters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of our invention is to reduce the cost, and improve the appearance, and make stronger and less liable to get out of order, the .foot-railings of counters, which are so constructed that the legs, or feet thereof, may be easily raised or lifted from the licor, to enable the iioor under such railing to be easily cleaned, without any obstruction from such railing, or its legs or feet.

To this end our invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In Figure l of the drawings hereto annexed is shown our improved bracket or support for such foot-railings attached to a section of a counter. Fig. 2 shows our foot railing attached to a counter as in use. Fig. 3 shows it raised, for cleaning the floor, E, under it.

A in Fig. 1 represents a section of the n base of the counter, to the front side of which is secured the bracket arm B.

D is a leg or foot, the bottom of which rest-s upon the floor and supports the railing, a metal pipe or rod passing through the opening F at or near the upper end thereof, from which leg or foot piece, and forming a part thereof, projects the arm G, the inner end of which is hinged to the outer end of the bracket arm B, the hinge being indicated at 0. A series of these brackets is placed along the front of, and attached to, the counter, at suitable distances apart, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and thus form the support of` such foot-railings R, the same being passed through the openings F in Fig. 1. The foot-railing so supported and held in place, may then easily be turned back upon the hinge O, toward the counter, which will raise the leg or foot support thereof high above the ioor, and enable the floor beneath such railing to be thoroughly cleansed, with out any obstruction from such railing, or any part of its support.

We are aware that foot-railings for counters have heretofore been made, supported and held in place, by a series of arms or brackets, secured to the front side of the count-er, a suitable distance above the' floor,

with arms hinged to the outer ends thereof,l

and connected by the foot-railing or pipe, the foot-rail itself being provided independent of the bracket with downwardly-extending feet or supports, adapted to rest on the floor, such brackets being made straight; and that invention we do not claim. v

Our improvement consists in making the leg, or foot support, of theY railing, and the arm hinged to the bracket, both in one piece, so that the leg or foot support cannot be knocked out of place by the feet of customers striking it, and the frame .maybe cast in one piece, and also in making the bracket or inner piece, curved or crooked, so that it can be attached to the counter at a point below a horizontal from the arm projecting from the leg or foot, and to enable it to be attached to a beveled or sloping surface, at or near the base of the counter, as Well as a perpendicular one.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. In a support for the footrailin gs of counters, the combination of the bracket arm B,

adapted to be attached to the counter, the

leg or foot D provided with openings F and integral with the arm G, hinged to the said arm B, and the foot railing R passing through said opening F, substantially as described.

2. In a support for foot railings for the front of counters, the combination of the curved bracket arms B, adapted to be attached to either a perpendicular or the beveled sloping surface near the bottom of a counter, the legs or feet D provided with openings F, and integral with the arms G hinged to said arms B, and the foot railing R passing through said openings F, substantially as described.
