SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,559, dated January 24, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, SVEIN M. HALVARDS- GAARD, of South Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in I-Iusking-Pins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to hand corn-huskers or husking pins, to which adjustable finger receptacles or straps are attached, and the plate or blade of which, at its forward end, is preferably of forked construction forming hollow bent claws.

The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts in a husking pin of this description, the same including an adjustable palm-piece that protects the palm of the hand and gives increased strength to work and control the impleinent.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section, upon the line l1 in Fig. 2, of a husking pin constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an under or inner face longitudinal View of said pin; Fig. 3 is a rear end View thereof; Fig.4 is a transverse section upon the line t4: in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows on; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section upon the line 55 in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows y.

A, is the metal plate or stripping portion of the husker, preferably made of steel, and constructed at its forward end with two bent claws made concave on their faces, the one, I), of said claws being in line with the body portion of said plate and the other one, b, curving over to one side of it, whereby the husking pin can be more perfectly manipulated to act upon and strip the ear of corn. The body portion of said plate is made concave on its under or inner side, as usual, and it is fitted in the rear with a lower, externally-convex, longitudinally-sliding sleeve or palm-piece B, that may also be made of steel and which, when using the implement, protects the palm of the hand and gives increased strength to work and control the tool and also adapts it to different widths of hand.

This palm-piece B, has attached to it a pivoted buckle O, with which the back end of the leather or flexible strap D, that passes over the back of the hand, as in other husking pins, engages. By thus connecting the strap at its one end with the attached buckle of the palm-piece B, it can be regulated as required by sliding said palm-piece backward or forward.

E is a saddle or key adjustable along a slot 5, in the plate A, for holding the strap D, intermediately of its length down toward'the back of said plate to make the strap form separate finger and hand receptacles, but this key, if desired, might be omitted, or be adjusted out of the Way when a mitten is used on the hand.

F, is a longitudinally adjustable slide to which the forward end of the strap D is attached, and answers for a finger piece, said slide being bent upward and forward at its front end Where the strap is attached to it,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a husking pin, the combination, with the stripping blade or plate, of a lower, externally-convex, longitudinally-sliding palmpiece, arranged on the under side of the rear portion of said plate and provided with a strapcarrying buckle or holder embracing said plate, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. In a husking pin, the combination, with the stripping blade or plate, and its lower rear longitudinally-sliding palm-piece, having an attached buckle embracing the plate, of the longitudinally-adjustable forward finger piece, and the flexible strap connecting said finger piece with the buckle of the palm-piece, essentially as described.

3. In a husking pin, the combination of the stripping blade or plate A having claws b b,

slots 0 c, at its forward end, the finger rest or adjustable slide F, extending its end through said slots and clamped to the under side of the plate, the saddle or key E, the longitudinally-sliding palm-piece B on the under side of the rear end of the plate and having a buckle C embracing the plate A, and the flexible strap D, substantially as shown and described.
