B. 0. McMINN.
HAND CORN HUSKER.
No. 303,445. Patented Aug. 12, 1884.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR: 6/ MZ44/%c% 7% 7% ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT CALDWELL MOMINN, OF GOLDEN CITY, MISSOURI.
HAND CORN-HUSKER.
Application filed May 1, 1884.
To (tZZ whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. McMINN, of Golden City, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Corn- Huskers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Thisinvention relatesto a hand corn-husker, in which a plate forked at its stripping-end is used, and in which a flexible strap, arranged to pass over the back of the hand or between the fingers, is combined with the plate for the greater convenience of holding the husker.
The invention more particularly consists in the construction of the plate at its forked end, which is made in the form of hollow bent claws, and in certain means for adjusting the flexible strap to suit different-sized hands, or to pass over a mitten when one is used on the hand, whereby a better hold is taken on the ear of corn and the husker is made to act more efficiently and with greater case, both as regards its manipulation and action generally.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figurel represents a view in perspective of my improved husker as held for use by the hand, and Fig. 2 a further perspective view of the husker as it appears when removed from the hand.
A is the metal plate or stripping portion of the husker, the outer forked end of which is constructed to form two claws, a c, that are made concave on their faces, and are so bent that they point toward the operator, the lower claw, a, being the shorter. This construction secures a good hold on the ear of corn. The wider part b of the plate is also made concave on its face, and constitutes what may be termed the palm of the husker, the back of the plate on which the hand rests prefer SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,445, dated August 12,1884.
(No model.)
ably being convex, so as to work easily on the hand. The outer end of the plate is furthermore constructed to form an outwardly and backwardly bent bow or concave-convex finger-guard, c, with a hook, c, on its outer end,
for attachment of one end of the leather or flexible strap B, which passes over the hand or between the fingers, as said end of the strap has before been hooked to husker-plates of different construction. The other end or portion of the strap B fits by means of slits or button holes (1 over any one of a series of notched or reduced portions, (2, of the shank of the plate. This constitutes a very simple and convenient means of letting out or tightening up the strap to adapt the husker to large or small hands, or to admit of the strap being passed over a mitten when one is used on the hand.
The instrument may be held either so that the strap will pass over a mitten when one is used on the hand, or so that the strap will pass over the hand or between the fingers, the thumb in each case resting within the claws.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hand corn-husker made of a metal plate forked at its outer end, said forked end portion constructed to form bent claws a a, of concave shape on their faces, the one a being made shorter than the other, substantially as shown and described.
2. The adjustable strap B, in combination with the plate A, having notched or reduced portions e in its shank, the bowed fingerguard 0, onto the outer end of which said strap is hooked, and the bent concave claws a a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ROBERT CALDWELL MCMINN.
