INDEX FILE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,686, dated January 10, 1893.

Be it known that 1, Josera L. NORMAN, of Kansas Oity, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index File-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to an improvementin index file holders and the object of my invention is to provide a holderof suitable size upon which, on slips of paper or cards of suitable size prepared for the purpose, may be placed, in alphabetical order, the names and dates of cases on record, and which, when placed on the holder, are filed away in pigeon holes or other suitable receptacles.

To the above purposes my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

I will now proceed to describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my index file holder, in position to be operated. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. resents a perspective view of the spring guide wire showing a modified form of construction; the index holder being removed. Fig. 4 is a sectional View, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and showing also the index holder in proper position. Fig. 5 represents a vertical sectional view of the index holder, detached, and having a number of slips or cards thereon containingthe names and dates of cases on record.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 represents a board or slab of wood or other suitable material of any desirable size and form and having a recess 2 in its upper surface, and an opening 3 communicating centrally with said recess and extending through the block 1. A plate 4 of thickness corresponding to the depth of the recess 2 preferably, is iitted and secured therein by screws or other suitable means, and is provided with a boss or projection which extends downward into the opening 3. Secured rigidly at its lower end in the vertical opening 6, extending through the plate and boss or projection Fig. 3 rep-` 5, is the spring guide wire V7, which extends upward for a suitable length and is bent over and downward semicircularly at 8, the extreme end thereof being pointed or sharpened as at 9, for a purpose to be explained hereinafter.

In my modied form, shown at Figs. 3 and 4, a recess 2 is made in the block, and has cemented or glued therein a plate 10, having a vertical hole 11 therethrough, in alignment with an opening 12 through the board. The spring guide wire 7 has the bend 8 and sharpened end 9, and further continues through the openings 11 and 12, being bent horizontally at 13 toward the front end of the board,

the said horizontal portion 13 resting in a groove 14 for its entire length, and having its extremity secured by a screw or rivet 15 to the upper wall of the groove 14; the said groove is to allow the board to rest perfectly flat upon the table or in other suitable position.

The index card or slip holder is constructed as follows; a small board or slab of wood 16 is provided with a recess 17 in its upper surface and a hole or an opening 1S extends th rough said board or slab, and communicates centrally with the recess 17. Aplate 19 is secured in said recess by screws 2O or other suitable means, and is provided with a boss 0r projection 21, which extends through the opening 18. An opening 22 extends through the said boss or projection and plate 17, and the lower end of a vertically erect-ed tube or sleeve 23 being rigidly secured therein. The cards or slips 23n and the indicating card 23b or paste-board or stiff paper preferably, are perforated and slipped over the tube or sleeve 23, and rest upon the board 16.

When desiring to place 'a new name for record on the index, for example, a name beginning with A the index card or slip holder is removed from its pigeon hole, and placed upon the board 1 the pointed or sharpened extremity 9 of the spring Wire being inserted in the upper end of the tube or sleeve 23; the indicating card marked A to designate the holder is then slipped from the tube or sleeve 23, onto the guide Wire 7, and as many of the index cards or slips as necessary. The index holder is then removed from its engagement with the pointed or sharpened end of IOO the guide Wire' 7, the nevtT name for record placed thereon, and the index holder returned to its former position relative to the guide Wire, When the cards or slips and indicating card are returned to the index holder, which may then be returned to its pigeon hole.

To prevent the slips or cards being accidentally detached and lost, the spring Wire 24C is crimped as shown at 25 and forced into the channel of the tube or sleeve 23, the 11pper end of the Wire being formed into a loop 26, to afford a suitable finger hold when desired to remove the Wire 24, and to prevent the accidental displacement of the cards or slips as specified.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. In an improved index le'holder, the combination of a board, a plate secured therein, aspring guide Wire in said plate, with an indexv card or slip holder, consisting of a board, a plate secured therein, and a vertically extending tube or sleeve in said plate, substantially as set forth.

2. An improved index file holder, comprising a board, a plate secured therein, a spring guide Wire extending through said plate, the upper end thereof being bent over and downward, and pointed or sharpened, and its lower arm bent horizontally and secured to the under surface or side of the board and an index card or slip holder, comprising a board, a plate secured therein, a boss or projection from said plate, and a vertically extending tube or sleeve in said plate, substantially as set forth.

3. In an improved index card or slip holder, the combination of a board, a plate secured to said board, and avertically extending tube or sleeve, with a crimped spring Wire, having an enlargement or loop at its upper end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
