Description
UNITED STATES GEORGE J'. OOLBY, OF WATEBBURY, VERMONT.
IMPROVENI ENT IN WINDOW-SHUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,908, dated July 25, 1865.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. GOLBY, of the town of Waterbury.in the conn ty of Washington, inthe State ofVermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Holding in Position Movable Stats iu \Vindow-Shutters; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specitication, in which the figure represents a broken ot't' section through the edge view of a movable-slat bliudshutter.
The object ot' my invention is to hold'movable slats in any desirable positionopen or closed-when they move so easily that the wind will change them in their position.
My invention consists in attaching a curved corrugated sprin g to the shutter-frame, to bear ou the edge of one ofthe slats, each concave of the spring forming a notch, so that whenever the slat is left in the corrugation the series of slats that are connected together by the moving rod will be held.
To enable others skilled in theart t0 make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawing and to the letters marked thereon.
To either the top, middle,or bottom piece, A, ofthe frameof an ordiuarily-constrncted movable-slat window-shutter I attach a spring', a, it describing a circle whose center is the pivot PATENT OFFICE.
b of the slat B, the spring being bent so as to form a series ofshort curves, c c c c, (three or 1nore,) into which the rounded edge of the slat I B bears, so that when the slats are moved by the connecting-rod D, Whereverit is left, their they remain until their position is changed by the will otl some person.
The advantages of my improvement are that it is so simple, cheap, and effective in its operation. They can be put upon any movable Slat-blinds for a mere tritling expense, and are so easily operated, and they hold the slats so perfectly wherever they are placed. When movable'slat window-shutters are fitted tight enough to hold in position by their friction on the pivots, they often, by painting, become so tight that they cannot be moved at all, and whentted suiicientlylooseto be easily moved they will assume one position by the weghtof the connecting-rod, or they will open or close by the action ot' the wind on them. Thus it will be seen that there is a necessity for some such device as the above described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A curved corrugated spring acting on the edge of a slat to hold the section of movable slats in any desirable position, as set forth.
GEORGE J. COLBY.
